There Sure Are A Lot of Doom and Gloom Posts In Here

The reason this topic always stirs up drama, insults and arguments is the desire for validation.

With FF14 players, this means they chose to play this game, they don't intend to quit any time soon because it's safe and comfy and they want validation that they made a good choice to support it. Complaints go directly against this. This is why many players seem to lash out defensively, tell complainers to leave and even hurl insults around.

Complaints are touching a nerve. If the game was in a healthy state and better than competing games, complaints would be laughed at and ignored. But deep down most people know it isn't in a healthy state. The complaints threaten their fragile copium bubble and they hate it. They'll launch into defensive rants about how special their mediocre game is.

They're not trying to convince us FF14 is a great game. They're trying to fool themselves.

I believe the complaints are valid.

But I feel like the issue is further exasperated by the content drought. It gives people more time to mull over the issues that become more apparent when they aren't preoccupied by raiding, grinding, decorating, roleplaying, etc.

It's like how when folks were stuck in a 4000+ queue.

They swarmed the forums because they couldn't even play the abundance of new content available.

Or when people want a house. And can't get one. They naturally go to the forums, reddit, twitter, discord etc to voice their discontent.

The offical forums have been like this for a looooooong time.

Sure, you can take the moral highroad on this, but there is no fooling to be had here. Everyone in their right mind knows exactly what kind of place this forum is. I for one don't seek any kind of validation here. I simply give credit where I feel credit is due, whether I feel it is good or bad. Arguments are to be had to express a point of view that differs from another's. I have no idea where you are getting that it is used as a means to get validation. You don't argue for that, you go with the flow that doesn't give resistance. That's where comments/insults about circle jerking stems from.

As far as complaints being laughed at and ignored, I would look to those who are actually spending their time playing the game. As I said before, the experience here and what you experience in game are a night and day difference. Those who feel the game is not in a healthy state is their opinion, and I challenge them and you to provide receipts otherwise. Of course my view on what is special and what makes a game special is subjective. I never intended to spout it as fact. Call it copium if you will, but I rather enjoy playing FFXIV, and I wouldn't be supporting it with hard earned dollars and valuable time otherwise.

I think people forget the purpose of having forums is to provide feedback to the developers. The vast majority of feedback is going to be on things players feel need to be changed as there is little use in saying "Hey, I like playing the game" as you are providing that feedback by staying subbed. Just simply because of that it will always have a negative feeling as most posts will be about things people feel are wrong in the game. That being said, there have been a lot of troll posters making threads to intentionally cause drama through extremely hyperbolic takes or intentionally false premises. You have to just learn to weed out those threads and focus on threads that are trying to provide actual feedback and conversation.

Obviously lashing out and hurling insults is not the right way. However, sometimes there are suggestions made to someone who seems completely miserable of the "Maybe you should move on" sort and they are the ones who lash out and attack the person. You're representing it as always "Get out of our game" and sometimes it's "You're not happy here. Why are you staying and making yourself miserable?". In a lot of cases, it's the sunken cost fallacy. They have put things into this game and they don't want to walk away. And walking away is hard. I've done it multiple times over 20+ years of MMOs. It's never easy. Sometimes you go back here and there (I still have a now Daybreak Games account and pop into EQII when XIV is down for maint sometimes) and sometimes you can make a clean break. But MMOs are going to change and you can stay and try to give feedback but at a certain point it's just time to throw in the towel.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't have issues or complaints that needs be brought to attention, only that this recent trend of doomers predicting the game will collapse just comes off as silly to me.

I think people get hyperbolic about their points and it can be easy to dismiss what they say as doom and gloom because of how bad their take overall can be. That being said, a lot of times there is a point that can be dug through in their doom and gloom and actually be conversed about if you look for it. It's obviously easier to draw attention to your opinion the crazier it is and a lot of the extreme people lean heavily into it. There is a reason clickbait articles and videos work, you want to see the craziness or watch the train wreck because that's how we are wired.

I guess all I am saying is it seems like there is a lot of doom and gloom because it's easier to get attention when you make hyperbolic points so it sounds a lot worse than reality.

Maybe one fifth of the complaints I see here have any real merit. Most of the time, I just roll my eyes at how petty people are.
