I think a mix of Zidane and Gabranth could be interresting, they kind of use the same weapons (dual blades that attach into a twinblade).
As said before, name it something like Materia Blade and Athame or something along those lines.

I'm iffy on Dual blades that combine into a double bladed weapon for Mystic Knight. Mystic Knight's theme is enchanting your weapon with the right element to attack. Dual-blades that can combine into a double-bladed weapon are essentially "too cool" to not be the focus of how a class works. The very of theme of switching between two modes would be the dominant aspect of that weapon and would dilute any other aspects you try to tack onto it.
Rune/Mystic Knight's weapon needs to be something that easily accentuates the power of enchanting a weapon with magic. Plainer weapons like scimitars would work to this end. A segmented whipblade animated by magic also works with, and can help accentuate the theme. For example, Seven from type-0 can snag an opponent with her weapon and she can then using her "Livewire" ability to channel Lightning magic through her weapon to instantly zap an enemy that's been snagged; it's just perfect interplay between weapon and magic.
Edit:
Think about the Gunbreaker job. Gunbreaker exists because of the Gunblade weapon, not the other way around. Gunblades are cool enough that they created an entire job just to include them in the game. That's the level of focus that the dual-blades + twinblade combo would need to have in a job.
This is a very valid point. Would need to see if focusing on scimitars/curved blades would work, since PLD has a lot of those already.
