Update on Future UI Changes.

I can get my HP over 3400 on WHM, so even that's not an issue. I'm not pretending it can tank, I am saying it can. You are saying the opposite. I'll try to get a video if I have time to do so.

edit: meant to say that I agree in that a letter will never stop players from doing what they see fit, if it is possible and within reason for them to do so. But if SE wants us to think inside these little boxes, that's not really gonna be the way of it unless they seriously restrict abilities we can borrow.

It is beyond obvious what each job's role is. What a player can do with them is irrelevant.

Why you would even put so much effort into tanking on a WHM is beyond me when WAR can do it so much better (PLD is meh atm and this patch is supposed to fix it so we'll see) but to each his own. Doesn't change the point that WHM is a healer by definition. It has been since the beginning of Final Fantasy.

So it's not SE telling you to think inside some little box. You can do what you want. SE is saying WHM is a healer by design and thus it is assigned an H. It's more that your putting so much meaning/value on these letters.

I don't have even the slightest sliver of expectation for them allowing us to chose any of the letters for jobs. Maybe in a limited way for some jobs, or maybe full choice for classes. Honestly I see a greater chance they just scrap the letters and simply have 1-8. I'd laugh at any WHM who assigned a T for their letter in a party I'm in though, given we can chose. I wouldn't even be able to take it seriously. It's completely against the definition.

In conclusion, WHM is a healer. It is designed as a healer. It excels at healing. Tanking is not it's strong suit. There are jobs that are suited to tanking and such efforts pay off better on them. That being said, if you have no issue going against this obvious design and building your WHM to tank, then there's no difference between being a guy who tanks on WHM and being a guy who tanks despite being assigned an H.

Though I can't wait to see how this is implemented to see it's exact functions...
Really wouldn't mind a distance meter though...Super cereal...that would be better than some of the changes they described to the UI...

This was a concept I started bringing up to friends about a week ago, and I made a very crude mock-up image of how I thought such a thing should work.

In the picture, I had numbers instead of letters as your post suggests SE will be using, but the basic idea was that each Mob engaged by a party would be assigned a number based on order of being engaged. This number would not only show by the mob's name, but would also show up in an enemy "party" list which would allow players to click on the name of a monster to target it rather than trying to tab-target or click target the monster's actual avatar in game (this is mostly due to fights with a large amount of adds piled together, making targeting hard and making figuring out which mob everyone should target even harder with multiple mobs of the same name. Some people may argue we should do an assist on a player, but I believe this is more efficient and smooth).

Hopefully this is remotely helpful to the dev team, if you guys happen across it.

Of course for gamepad and keyboard players they would need a quick text command something as simple as ;a ;b ;c to target the specific mob.

even a macro /target a /target b /target c would work.

Being a gamepad player myself, I think that marking the mobs that are engaging my party w/ letters/numbers is a great idea. Even for fights where links will be of different mob types being able to:
/party <p1> grab <e[nemy]1> I'll get <e[nemy]2> and hold it while DDs finish off <e[nemy]0>.
Seeing as mobs essentially become an ad-hoc party having <e[nemy]0>...<e[nemy]7> like we have <p0>...<p7> seems to make sense.
/assist [puller] is still useful allowing everyone to target [puller]'s target before it gets engaged and before the ad-hoc <e[nemy]> party comes together.
and /target <e[nemy]#> would work the same as /target <p#>
I would suggest that w/ this targeting you ensure that <e[nemy]#> remains unusable until the <e[nemy]> party has been fully claimed or it'll turn into a cheap NM grabbing tool where all you have to do is run around mashing a macro that:
/target <e[nemy]0>
/ac "Provoke" <t>
That would be bad as I don't think we want to help claim bots too much.

I would like to note that if it is correctly implemented, a mob would only appear on your list when it was engaged or claimed, so I don't think that would be an issue. I can see issue if it would appear on your list just when aggro'd, but truthfully if the mob had enough time to aggro you... someone's probably tab voked it by then.

I do not think it should be only in dungeons under any circumstances. Nobody marks mobs with the current system because you can only use it in leves... One of the most potentially useful things for battle is essentially wasted for 90% of the game's content.

Like Riaayo said, so long as it only placed them in the list after being claimed, not just cause they aggro you, this should be a non issue. Does play inside leves/dungeons really need to be so different from "normal" play? I think that the goal should be to have a single fully functional system, not 3 different ones depending on what your doing at the moment.

I don't know, all I care about is cases such as Myrmidon Princess battle where new spawns of Myrmidon Guards need to be targeted fast. (moogle is another example where this would be helpful)

When you have 10-14 trash ants, 1 main boss and a guard where does the guard fit on the list, how long is the list ? etc.

I don't see the need for this feature in the open world, give me an example of why you would need to quickly target a random world monster ?

This isn't to say I don't like Riaayo image/idea but the problem with that example is there is no party widget, no minimap.

Also if you look at the 2.0 UI picture there is a lot more UI stuff on screen, where would such a list fit?
