Got a plot right next to my FC's house in Lavender beds. Nobody even tried to contest it. There are still 12 empty plots.
Pretty sure the people complaining are ones trying to compete for a shirogane house. You'd have to be extremely lucky and be one of the first to log in to get one of those. Should play it safe and take a plot in a ward with a lot of available plots.

Got a 216-ish Queue, and my first choice was bought. BUT!!! I trained to make the perfect route for all my other choices, and got the second one without problems! I love lavender beds and its waterfalls
