Will Mounts be able to jump?

Adding jumping does not turn every MMORPG into a "platformer." A "platformer" game is more about movement and dodging pitfalls than about defeating enemies, going on quests, socalizing, and crafting. In a platformer game, its usually your specific goal to get from point A to point B without falling in pits or touching an enemy. Adding the ability to jump off the ground does not suddenly turn an MMO into one of those games.

Just random manual jumping/bunny hopping itself is pointless. However, I highly doubt that is what people are referring to when asking for chocobo jump.

Jump for chocobo, I imagine, is to extend the maneuverability of the chocobo over a terrain that a normal character would not be able to. Mainly, cutting down on travel time by using small short cuts.

Honestly, isn't the whole idea of riding a chocobo to cut down on travel time by foot?

This can be done a lot of different ways;

• Pre-determined jumping areas; allowing chocobos to walk over small cliffs, but giving a jumping animation
• Pre-determined jumping points; requires player input or traveling over that point, like opening a door, while jumping you have no control over the character
• Player controlled manual jump; the character has to perform a timely jump over the clipping planes if they want to transverse over an object

An example for the first one is from FFVII. Your chocobo could fly, swim, travel over mountains and such. However, ideally it was just a mode of transportation. It wasn't like you had to actually control how your chocobo flies like a flight simulator, or how your chocobo jumps like a platform game.

An example of the second is FFXIII's jumping. Their jumping are marked points or small areas of the map.

The last of those choices, player controlled manual jumps, probably is the least ideal choice. Seeing how this isn't an 'action platform' game like Mirror's Edge, where jumping is an essential game play. Meaning, the player is not riding a chocobo just to see if they can clear jumps over a cliff. Instead, they are riding a chocobo to transverse over a terrain quicker, and "jumping" improves that means.

You see this problem happen a lot in almost any action/adventure game that allows you to manually jump. The player always attempts at some point to jump over some terrain that they clearly can not travel over. However, for most games it is an essential part of game play. In this case however, it is not, thus manual jumps is the least ideal choice of jumping for chocobos.

All I am saying is for now lets get all the issues the game has and fix them. You can design all the maps you want with jump for 2.0 but the main issue and this needs to be address before anything else is fixing all the problems in the current game as well as seeing how and if there is any problems at the launch of 2.0. Hell I would love to have my Mog House or player house now but i realize that this is something that isnt needed right now and that there are more important issue at hand. Its called being patient and waiting. So if we have to wait 1-2 years thats fine as long as all issues with the current and uncoming launch of 2.0 is addressed 1st. You can add all you want but in the end will there be issues, is this gonna create more problems right now? Maybe and maybe not, but this game has already gotten a bad press and thats why I say worry about FIXING the game 1st, before adding stuff like jump, swimming etc. I didnt not say that they couldnt design the world for these features but implement these features at a later date once FFXIV is up to par. On a side note just because I dont see the need nor do I want to be forced to use a swim or a jump feature, dosent mean that SE should not add said features. I am not for it nor am I against adding said features but would like the option of useing them or not useing said features.

To get over obstacles and ledges in your path. Durr.

Every 3D game needs to allow the player to get over obstacles somehow. Either an auto-jump or a manual jump is fine, but you need to have one or the other. The fact that FF games haven't had either has been a blight on the series ever since FFX.

Even if the game isn't a platformer, the ability to jump still makes it easier and more enjoyable to traverse the landscape, since you don't have to worry about getting caught on or blocked by annoying knee-high ledges or other obstacles which, realistically, shouldn't be obstacles at all.

You still don't get the point that they have DIFFERENT parts of the team that focus on different things. They have an event team, a design team, animation team, etc.

Not all of these teams focus on one thing at once. And on top of that, jump wouldn't slow down a lot of what they are planning. As you would see in the second letter from the producer, they already have animations for the races for jump. What I'm getting at is it's not stopping them from fixing the game in any way.

And about Mog Houses and what not, it's being added and created right now. Lol

Actually, working on a jump feature that has any sort of use can slow things down because while there are separate teams they work together, and if SE wants to make sure jump absolutely has to be in the game and has to work it'll push the update back till they get everything flowing properly.

It's not like the market ward update with buying from search where they can just mask it till they debug it, if you literally can't progress a dungeon without the jump feature, guess what's going to happen? lol

So I get what you're saying, but do know they rely on each other more than you think so he's not that far off base, because for example the UI team works with the map team who work with the event team. You can't make a new ability usable without the assistance of the UI team to create an icon/animation/etc for it. See what I mean? The only time they "work separately" is the development divisions, for example first and 2nd division of SE iirc are offline/handheld while 3rd is the MMO division.

It hasn't slowed them down. The'yve sill managed to push out huge patches while having all kinds of things like animations for jumping (and lots of other things), riding goobbues, and all sorts of other things. Anything that adds something to the game with some concievable use is not slowing them down or wasting their time. It's contributing something.

Nothing released so far utilizes jump, so why it would slow anything down? If content utilizes a jump feature and the jump mechanic just plain isn't working properly it'll slow things down.

Did you not see the second letter from the producer? They are clearly working on jump and said they were polishing it up.

It hasn't slowed down things yet, even if there is not content yet for jump. Did you just read what you typed? It's coming in 2.0... why would the new team release something that won't work? Look at the initial release of this game and see if they will make that mistake again.

I did read what I typed, seems people doesn't understand the difference, but this is the Final Fantasy XIV forums after all. Make a basic java application and see how easily one tiny error can slow down the completion of your app compared to if you had no errors at all.

I should probably start on a FFXIV forum dictionary of some sort.

Define:Slow Down - "Final Fantasy XIV Forum. v. The act of coming to a complete stop."

This is what people seem to think is meant by "slow things down", it doesn't necessarily mean it'll halt everything, it simply means if there's content that uses it and the mechanic isn't working, it'll slow progress, not kill it. "Polishing it up" means the mechanic itself, i.e hit button > jump is being polished, however implementation into content, i.e hit button > jump > dodge TP move > traverse platforms > fall off platforms > etc isn't in that equation, you do have to program interaction, it doesn't just happen, and if that isn't working properly, as you said yourself, why would SE push out something half-ass again?

Think about that.
