So with all of this consolidation Why do we still have 4 different Fires?

Heck, Aero III is separate from Aero-Aero II because it's an AoE. If the spell is functionally different (be it an AoE or has mechanics), then SE isn't going to merge it... plus, as Almidia said, BLM is not in risk of skill bloat. If you're like me, you're most likely going to push Blizzard off of your main hotbar and replace it with Triplecast and with Raging Strikes gone, replace it with the Ley Lines teleport. If you had Manaward and Manawall on your hotbar, then you have more free space, as they're now merged into one oGCD... this was a weird change and I don't like it.

if they consolidated the fire spells your rotation would just be 11111111112311111111112311111111123
i guess with the ecochian change you at least get to maintain thunder without losing everything again but still it would be well beyond simple
the blizzard spells are the ones with bloat since blizzard doesn't really serve any purpose once you get blizzard III and ever since they made freeze work with targeting macros it's pretty much just better than blizzard II

RDM will probably be even simpler than BLM since their whole spell rotation can be macro'd down to 3 buttons and it's just "use the one with lower mana"
then you do the 12345 melee attack and finisher which is also "use the one with lower mana" and can also just be added to the 3 macro buttons. Stuff that's locked out until it procs is a bit interesting that way

This topic is talking about Fire skill consolidation; I said what I feel would be the only real form of skill consolidation for BLM's Fire spells that could be reasonably achieved without completely disrupting the way BLM plays, as what seems to be what they're going with in 4.0 for several classes based on all the butthurt I see around the forums these days regarding the changes. Not sure why you have to get all antagonistic about something that obviously isn't even going to be in the final game.

Skill consolidation *simplifies* a job, there is no getting around that. That's the entire purpose of skill consolidation. You can't hate one and embrace the other.

Disagree. BLM is one of the classes that made me have to sacrifice skills to be able to keep using only two crossbars instead of three.

Also, pretty sure that if you were ever hitting only three buttons as a 50+ BLM you were pretty bad.

I have two crossbars as well, but they have their own purpose. One is for single target (the one I mainly use) and the other for AoE's. The one main difference between these two bars is that Fire II replaces Fire IV. I also have a hotbar for keyboard just for abilities that I only need to use if damage can be mitigated.

That's every single relevant BLM skill in one cosy location. SB is removing Raging Strikes for us Casters, so I'll be putting the Ley Lines Aetherial Manipulation in its place. Blizzard might also lose its use, so I'll put Fire in its place and have Triplecast where Fire currently is in the image. My keyboard hotbar is going to be getting a little smaller, too. I might also replace Flare with Foul on my main hotbar... depending on what Umbral Hearts actually does to Flare's MP cost.

BLM is not suffering skill bloat.

I'm not being all antagonistic, I'm explaining why it in fact disrupts the way BLM plays, but you don't care about the new changes so you don't want to understand why the proposed change is bad.

Removing skills you never used isn't much of a sacrifice though, you don't actively use 48-32 skills.

With the proposed change you'd only hit 3 in a regular rotation since you no longer have procs, that's why in my other post i reworded it, the proposed change isn't devolving BLM to level 50, it's devolving it to level 6.

Maybe Square-Enix should give BLM an ability that toggles their Ice and Fire spells?

Example:
THM Lv 4 gets Fire and Blizzard
THM Lv 10 "aoe ability name here"
THM Lv 18 gets Fire II and Blizzard II
BLM Lv 31 gets Fire III and Blizzard III

"aoe ability name here", when active, will grant aoe to those spells at their respective level.

I'm only BLM Lv39 or 40 (can't remember), so I don't know the job.

Fire III and Blizzard III replace your Transpose skill, so making them 'toggle' between Astral/Umbral phases wouldn't work.

BLM is sounding much more fun after reading this discussion. I'm one of those less competent mages who could keep Enochian up just fine against a practice dummy but stood no chance in an actual fight where i also had pay attention to mechanics. I couldn't keep track of the timers as well as all the other shit that happens in a boss battle. So i dropped BLM hard even though I'd been competent enough at it previously to use it it my Coil static (read lvl 50 BLM really wasnt that complex lol). very much looking forward to trying out again in SB now Enochian isn't on timer. It was a fun job, turned into one that I personally found exhausting & frustrating & hopefully now its gone back to being fun again. And I'd wrap anyone over the knuckles who tried to take any of my toasty Fire spells. I'd be okay with them changing Fire 2's name tho

As I said before, in a different thread at a different time, I expected things to play out differently.

I expected BLM to get "Fire Mastery" and "Ice Mastery." As they leveled. Fire Mastery would first allow Fire III to be cast, but only under Umbral Ice. Ice Mastery meanwhile would allow Blizzard III to replace Blizzard (with Blizzard's cast time and everything else being lifted from Blizzard III). Fire Mastery II would replace Firestarter, with the same effects. Fire Mastery III would replace Fire with Fire IV, but only while under the effects of Astral Fire III and Enochian. Likewise, Ice Mastery II would replace Blizzard III with Blizzard IV while under the effects of Umbral Ice III and Enochian. But they went with dumb stuff instead. Also, rename Fire II to Inferno and Blizzard II to Cold Snap.

Oh, and Fire III would deal 300 potency, so its always stronger than Fire IV, but Fire IV requires less energy for similar power (280)

So you want the rotation to be this?

Blizzard III > Enochian > Fire III > Fire IV until low MP > Blizzard III > Blizzard IV > Thunder > Fire IV

You can't even use Fire III with the way you have things set up (can only be used under Umbral). I'm happy with how things are for BLM now and in SB.
