The FC and I were just discussing this horrible piece of character design right here. It was said that if Irvine were a real man he would actually repel women. I'll take anything I can get from FF9 but I'd burn down a Toys R' Us to get a Selphie Tilmitt hairstyle/outfit.

The issue is the moment they allow FFVII glamour and vanity, we will be SWARMED with Cloud and Tifa lookalikes. The Lightning hairstyle is a perfect example of this. It would just be annoying to see, so most of us would rather not give people the chance.

The Lightning hair is so popular because most of the other hairstyles suck for all the races. A fro-pompadour? Skrillix Haircut? really SE?
