Well in most games, I just generally like the way gear looks female characters compared to the male counterparts, but the gear doesn't differentiate much in FFXIV.
To quote a friend of mine, the one that introduced me to MMOs, "If I'm gonna be staring at a character for 3+ hours a day, it might as well be hot."
But I've never trolled dudes, I make it pretty clear I'm a guy so I don't get creeped on. My character on this account is male, but my Legacy account that my GF took over is a female character. -

I'm on the opposite end, I'm a female playing a male.
Reason being that I'm simply used to playing a male in most mmos, due to the costumes being sometimes too strippy for females and unwanted attention from boys.
I think it's also because I'm a rather tomboyish person in general and sometimes yearns for some of the fancy boy shoes that I can never wear. -
