Oh to all the people running crossfire I dont know if this is it because I dont run ATI but this is application profile tool from GURU 3D. This might be the one that has ffxiv that makes crossfire run super!

The CPU/MEM speed is new/after game went down, not 100% finished with overclock. I run the game at 1080P windowed mode, no crossfire because I need to have ALT-TAB. I use 8Q MSAA, 8 drawing, 5 background, lowest shadow(dont need), depth of field on, ambient off, high TQ, highest TF.

Have you tried with depth of field off? LoL I know a lot of people are starting to prefer it that way now. The background doesn't have the blurriness to it.

Ive got a AMD Phenom IIx6 1090t, radeon 5970, 6gig 1600 RAM and my machine lags a little on maxed settings, any suggestions?

shadow at lowest (i turn shadows off for MMOs since i don't care for them on MMOs)

avg of 40 FPS in towns, with 60 FPS outside of towns

no real testing done with fraps to see what i get, it runs fine with a little bit of lag depending on what i'm doing in the background as this PC is used for that char and the internet/vent/skype/aim/yahoo and movies so it gets bogged down a little at times but still plays the game well enough for me to lvl my mule char

but i really should retest some settings on the built PC idk why i have some of those things set so low, probably just forgot about them

Does not suck ^^ Its your CPU, its only something to play with. But yeah to be honest you would be running into problems with that power supply. To get a better card would involve you needing probably a 550W power supply and in some cases a tiny bit more. Another thing you may want to look into is since I dont know squat about AMD chips I dont know if a bigger video card would cause a bottleneck for that cpu. First thing to look at is your power supply though. That would deffinatley hold you back. Have you ever built your own CPU? Or was that built for you?

Well to be honest, I built my computer myself this was my first time doing it. I could not believe how easy it was. The resources we have today on the internet made it so. Sure you can do it yourself! The only thing I think that makes things difficult about building a computer once you have all the compatible parts and what not, is trouble shooting it if it does not work. Essentially putting in a new Power Supply is just 4 screws and plugging in some cables. As long as you are grounded and don't cause any static shock to the system the installation shouldn't be difficult at all. Another good thing about a replacement part like that is if it is defective you can always try the old one again to prove that it is defective. There are more than enough youtube videos that will help you decide if it is something you can do ^^

I installed these various NVIDIA drivers and used the SLI profile that I had provided in an earlier post. This one.

I am currently running beta drivers 267.46. My SLI results using that profile ended up 7498 on stock GPU settings.
When I upgraded to the later beta drivers 267.84 and 270.32 and administered that profile I took a 2000 point hit. It was as using the provided NVIDIA profile which usually capped me out at around 5500. I don't know for sure if there was anything I missed I did everything the way I usually do it but when I switched back to 267.46 my results returned to normal. Everything from 266.58 to 267.46 seemed to run that SLI profile fine for me and gave me the huge performance boost. This is just an FYI in case you were going to install 267.84 or 270.32

REMEMBER YOU BREAK IT YOU BOUGHT IT.

I just stopped in here to ask if everyone with a nvidia video card knows about the pre-rendered frames trick? In the nvidia control panel, set your pre-rendered frames to 0 for FFXIV and it'll give your FPS a nice bump.

I need a motherboard that supports a i7 920, sli and has enough room to fit 2x gtx 460's, any suggestions?

The trick was well known during beta for those with not so great (or new) gaming rigs. But I still do it even after I've upgraded my machine, and it still gives a small fps boost.

After a LOT of experimentation I finally have the chosen settings:
Max background draw detail.
Standard Character Detail
Lowest shadows(off in game)
Max texture settings.
8x AA

Just dropping my character detail to standard(8) boosted my fps from 45 around people in town, to 60 almost everywhere I go. Oddly the AA settings made my machine run smoother the higher they went till I hit the sweet spot of 8x. With the new SLI code I got, I found that 4x AA would drop my FPS to about 11 average. Weird, but whatever.
These settings on my rig let me run everywhere I go at 60fps pretty much constantly, with small dips in the 40's once in a while...but that only last a couple seconds at the most before it bumps back up to capped 60. Its really nice! I can now hold off on a new video card for an indefinite time w/out much fret.

Just to recap for folks who didn't catch my rig specs:
MSI P67A Mobo
i7 2600k (overclocked to 4.8 didn't do any improvement...so I run stock and the usage is still only around %30)
SLI EVGA GTX460 SE (These are the current bottleneck, GPU usage is around 97% on both cards)
8gigs Gskill Ripjaw DDR3 1600
Corsair H70 Liquid Cooling
Corsair 750w PSU

The machine runs around 43c-47c under gaming conditions on a rig thats on 24/7. 31c-34c Idle.
Eventually I will get a new Video card, but Im gonna wait at least a year...if not 2 before something comes out that will justify this new CPU, because right now, I'm barely putting it to work. These are really powerful chips that are way ahead of any GPU's on the market.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a bunch of fuss over different internet boards about FFXIV not really doing SLI all that well?

Also Vix, is there any particular difference between the standard GTX 460 and GTX 460 SE in terms of improved performance?

Dude you're pretty much set with that set up. There are people who were doing just fine with a 4850 512 mb.

If you want a better experience, I'd say grab another 4870 and crossfire it if you can.

I think you'll be able to get pretty close to max on FFXI with that set up. FFXI is pretty "high end" though. :)

your running about the same that i am. and you can OC if you really want to mine is OC to 3.5ghz just from the turbo options on my MOBO people have said to get them up to 4.0 stable

your GPU is fine, and its probably the stantard version as they have other ones with every thing unlocked so its factory OCed

you can just look at the OC settings for the other cards and match them through the ATI setup

Ya, there is fuss and for good reason. I just came back to correct myself. I did a benchmark test with my GPU moniter and it read 97% average between the two, but in game it seems to be around %50 on both. Sorry for assuming benchmark test would yield the same results. Really though, it is complete crap that they wont utalize the full potential of the cards.


SE is the special edition /super clocked, only an extra $20, and honestly not needed anymore. EVGA released a new bios to flash all GTX460's making them all Super clocked a couple weeks ago. They marketed it as a free upgrade, and was an easy 5 min self flashing program.

CPU is actually pretty good. The biggest jump you would see is another video card, or a single really fast one. Just make sure your motherboard supports crossfire. Im pretty sure that gigabyte board you have is crossfire only, not SLI.

Just a heads up on my settings:
On a whim, I put the AA up to max and now the frames are even better.

I still have the character draw to 8 and shadows off. I run @1080p and 99% of the time am at 60fps. It now only drops to 45-50 for burst that last a few seconds. Durring those burst my GPU's activity jumps to high 70's. But when it goes back to 60fps, the GPU usage between the two card holds pretty solid around %50.

hey vix, do u use radeonpro at all? i have xfire set up but i can't get radeonpro to ever work, keeps crashing on startup

Oh and he said something about the graphics card being upgradeable to one that is worth £100 more just with a simple firmware upgrade or something that he is also doing to make it better than it actually is, as they one above it is exactly the same just with some features locked out but it can be unlocked through software or something.

yeh, you can take the 6950 and flash it to a 6970 which is free and bumps up the performance. but ur system should run ffxiv just fine. it just depends on how good u want ur game to look and how well u want it to run. you should be able to run everything on standard(character/background draw) and at 1080 with no slowdown unless ur in town or something

Anyone know what kind of settings I could be running with this setup or does my Graphics Card limit me to much? My CPU/GPU/RAM are all at stock and not overclocked at all also.
