agree with OP, tried it and it stutter as hell, then I used nvidia inspector, it has been working a lot better

I should also point out a problem with this cap in which the 1/1 option show's up to 120hz and yet the 90hz cap is the maximum. That's a contradiction and a bug and likely this was a last minute change with absolutely no testing whatsoever.
I have a 144hz freesync monitor but only the unlimited option (with big stuttering for me) or max 60 fps (Refresh Rate 1/1) in fullscreen mode... feels awful too me.
The Borderless window mode got the 144 fps (Refresh 1/1) but of course with the 90 fps cap... it still has some stuttering to me.
game looks...awful compared to yesterday and they've said nothing about it. It made my eyes hurt to look at. This nonsense came alight at the last minute really. Awful.
Lets stake a step back in the evolution of gaming and make 144 hertz screens useless...
Ugh.. SE.. please..
yep 2 days ago was running 1920x1080(144) now it wont allow me to go above a 60hz refresh rate nevermind the 90 fps cap. I could instantly tell on the menu with how laggy my mouse felt.
Please Square Enix for the love of people who invested into 144Hz or higher monitors, put illimited fps again or give us an option to run the game with 144 fps.
I can see a difference already with for example cinematics that look awful now with some tearing in the middle of the screen during them.
For the life of me I simply cannot understand how this is even a thing, or why people are defending it or simply saying it is a non issue. Please SE bring back uncapped FPS.
While I am not saying I agree with the change, some people simply do not care or are even bothered by it. To say the game looks awful now with the changes, or "I cannot stand looking at the game" IMO is a gross exaggeration but I guess when you are looking at graphics a certain way for so long, it is a bit of a thorn. They should IMO increase it to a max of 144fps. It is a good compromise on SE side. I thinik if enough people make a fuss over it they will probably change it.
I'm so glad I was wrong. The max 90 fps option does indeed use a different implementation than the other frame limit options. So far so good for me. No microstutters and variable frame drops. I'm happy SE proved me wrong and my consistent 90 fps has been a very smooth and enjoyable experience. How have others with high hz monitors been faring?
Same here, no micro stutters with Maximum. Maximum seems to be working well with g-sync, which syncs the monitor refresh rate to 90 in this case.
No matter what i do... i can not get the game running with 144hz in fullscreen.
The Fullscreen mode only runs with 60hz on my 144hz freesync monitor and i can also not use "Virtual Super Resolution" for upscaling my resolution anymore... they completly broke it.
High refresh rate is not even a new thing, I used 80-120Hz CRTs back in 2000 and we used to get very high FPS in games since they were programmed even more sketchily lol, getting 2-300 FPS in some older games was not unreasonable. I used to forcibly downclock my CPU in order to slow down games.
Citing computer safety as an argument too is just laughable, AMD after Athlon XP and Intel after Pentium 3 have all had cpu protection and GPUs have them too though I can't recall off-hand when that was implemented.
85Hz is surprisingly smooth, but I can't get it to 90Hz though, even when selecting it from the resolution drop down menu. It stays at 85Hz. I am not bothered, but I get shown the game runs at 90fps, the monitor/the driver is not having it...
*shrug*

i seem to only get 90fps in borderless windows mode. If i switch to fullscreen mode, i get capped at 60fps
Honestly thats not even accurate, Ill take 90hz and 4k true ultra wide hdr 3840x1600 over 1440p/1080 at 144 anyday. And 60% of the populations eyes cant detect much over 80-90 fps
2019 is the 4k hdr year, not 144 fps.
Regarding borderless vs full screen, and this is for any game, not just ff, you shouldnt be running full screen if borderless is an option. There are always known fps and performance issues running full screen. Most games wont even offer true full screen anymore for that reason. They run full screen borderless window and simply call that full screen when its not.
And if you have hdr, windows 10 to this day is still riddled with bugs running anything in true full screen with hdr. Microsoft is obvlious when it comes to pc full screen gaming because they are on the borderless band wagon too. If you have borderless options always use them.
ok, after playing at 60fps for a while.. i can say that this change is just disrespectfull!!
For example...I cant run it borderless because my screen will start flickering and everything else (like watching a stream besides playing) is stuttering and lagging.
I also running with two screens but it was fine before so thats not the problem either.
It was completly fine before the patch... so i'm forced to play with 60hz and with 60fps on a 144hz freesync monitor... really fun...
I could use the "fix" but i think the risk to getting banned for that is to high.
Have you tried disabling Windows game mode? It's a Windows feature that essentially tries to hoard all available resources for a full screen application it detects as a game. While this is great for when you only play a game, this is bad for multitasking and caused me and my gfs machines to stutter video playback on a second monitor and disabling that helped us to that end. Keep in mind that by doing so, you will be losing some performance but it was very minimal in our case and maybe you can play borderless windowed at >60hz. Hope this helps.
Please change it back SE... please... :(
I doubt they'll be any bans or that, there's no reasoning behind this for example we don't know even WHY this was even implemented to begin with or what they were even thinking. Bout the only comment so far is a translation that some people might have threatened to sue SE or something about possible computer hardware failure for unlimited FPS (even though PC gaming is the responsibility of people to watch their own temps). The fact that people ATM on reddit are basically recommending a minor modification to override the FPS cap to run the game the way it was before because their patch is actually causing performance issues just point's out how flawed this whole process is and how the communication just isnt there from SE. What's worse is it being set to 90FPS when the average monitor for high FPS is at least 120 or 144hz it makes no sense like the number was just pulled out of the air even.
Please just remove this it's not right that people might risk a ban just to be able to make the game playable that's just not on in 2019 SE!
There was nothing wrong with it before. We are "fixing" things that aren't broken. Revert please.
I bought a new gaming laptop so I could play FFXIV while away from home, and it ran perfectly before the Shadowbringers update. Now that this has been implemented I can't even get into the game with dx11 without it crashing at launch. And dx9 was discontinued. Thanks SE! Fix this, because I can't even play the game I paid for anymore!
Running an i5 and a 1060. It runs better for me now. Seems like an issue only the rich are having.
Game feels horrible to play going from 144hz to 85hz... this is absolute madness.
A person's individual financial wealth has nothing whatever to do with this. Saying it's a problem only for "rich" people is a nonsensical socio-political bash.
For that matter, wealth is relative. the hardware you claim to have is better than that of well over 90% of the world's population, most of whom have no computer of any kind and many of whom have never even seen one. YOU are rich to them.
I like how this has gained momentum, even though people said 1% issue lol.
You dont need to be "rich" to have a good computer, and it's sad to see people resorting to that argument
Welp, Square made me look the fool. It really is a hard 90 FPS cap.
Please revert this Square. If this was ok for 6 years why is it suddenly such a huge problem?
Also, do you really think it's ok to just sneak this in a patch note right before early access? If there is a legitimate reason for this it should have been announced well in advance, along with a heartfelt apology.
The really crazy thing was that we had the benchmark which is literally designed to test how your hardware will run once the expansions released. Then the day before it releases we get this absolute joke of a frame cap put in that prevents me from playing the game on some of my hardware.
It feels like false advertising to me...
People with laptops who cannot change their display's refresh rate are unable to play without resorting to risky third party tools or playing in unsupported DX9. DX11 flat out will not launch.
This needs to be undone entirely.
I have a 3840x1600 Ultrawide Monitor but with 75Hz Refresh Rate. So far I haven't notice any issues with the new cap Frames. The annoying thing now is that the Reshade Preset I use, the Frames have also gone down with the cap. If I turn it off, the game stays hard lock at 90FPS.
Welp, credit where credit is due. The limiter doesn't seem to impact my setup negatively. No stutters, no input lag, nothing. Still would be better to play at 144 but atleast this change didn't make the game unplayable for me.
sad how people have to turn to 3rd party tools to disable the limiter
