Lack of ugly people?

I like "fantasy rpg" as it is fantasy and therefore shiny-unreality but I do like the idea of having the option to ick it up a bit in the character creation screen. Still, beauty to some is ugly to others..its all pov based to me.

I find every race to be attractive on their own way, and can certainly be homely if someone tried.

I find that Highlander males have really unattractive faces (All 4 of them), b-but their bodies however...

Also, the first 5 races in this game are pretty much based on the FFXI races with tweaks.
Hyur are humans. Nothing really special but I do find Midlanders the most attractive than the rest.
Elezen are something. They're not your average cliché fantasy elves that look "perfect" embracing nature. I wish they didn't adopt the Elvaan aesthetic with them though. (especially the long neck. Really?)
Miqo'te and Lalafell are way better looking here. Taru Tarus look really ugly.
And Roegadyn are more like ogres than bears in this game. Naturally, people would think they're ugly. I find them okay though.

I think there are plenty of ugly characters in the game..xD

Maybe not in the "super fat and with hideous pimples all over her face and a hunchback figure" kind of way (and honestly, I'm grateful for that u.u), but in many other ways, there is still enough potential to look ugly.
From not knowing how to use make-up right (by now I have a 95% right ratio on guessing which female Miqo'te is played by an actual girl and which is played buy a guy who wants to look at a "sexy" catgirl, just based on the makeup xD) to using the default look / randomized look on several races; especially dangerous for female Roe and female Au Ra.

Honestly, I see a lot of characters I would consider kind of ugly. Or at least strange looking to me. They go for really sharp features, but will have pudgy faces, and it just conflicts and looks super unpleasant to me. Though I'm sure it looks find to them, so hey, more power to them.

About the only race I can't ever look at and think "that looks good" are manroes. I really hate their body proportions, and a lot of their hairstyles look kind of goofy. That said, I don't find them particularly ugly either, just awkward in a sorta unpleasant way to me. People who play male elezen also really struggle to make something not kind of awkward looking. I'm surprised at how many choose the creepy baby face ._.;

Isn't this why they released Male Au Ra's?

I think Au Ra males are far from ugly but people can certainly make them ugly unintentionally.

Male miqo'te have the one face with the forehead tumors, that's ugly.

I once spotted a player character of a female miqote, that they had somehow made pretty hideous, back in ARR.
I think I still have the screenshot of her somewhere. I am not sure if I should post it though, as I don't want whoever designed her to feel hurt.

I think the only way to look "ugly" is by combining weird skintones, eye/hair color, and face paints to make a ridiculously incoherent color scheme.

It could be considered a plus that it's almost impossible to look bad due to the limitations of XIV's creator. I had to mess around for hours with PSO2's creator before I got something that didn't exude any uncanny valley vibes in any situation.

That's fine. I find au'ra and femqotes too... schoolgirl-ish to me. Like they were ripped out straight from a harem anime so it's hard to take them seriously at most jobs in the game they play. They are pretty, so they have that going for them, which is nice

Most of the male Highlander faces are ugly. The last one looks decent, but has a neanderthal forehead. Midlander and Elezen have an old man version.

It's much easier to make an ugly male character than a female character.

Mine is pretty ugly face wise. The only thing that hides the weird upper lip is my beard (which I dislike since I wish it were longer)

Why are there no ugly PC races?

1. It's a fantasy RPG made by Japanese people heavily influenced by the anime/pop culture aesthetic.

2. A lot of people, especially the Japanese, use their characters as self-inserts into the fantasy world and nobody would want to be ugly if that were their actual appearance should they be isekaied into the game.

3. First impressions are a huge deal there and can often make or break future interactions. Japanese culture puts high importance on outward appearance; seeing clothing and grooming/style as an indication of a person's, inner character, wealth, and social status. Therefore, they spend a lot of time making sure they appear their best when going out in public. That philosophy has been translated into the game. So while there are races that may not fit a person's taste, it's nigh impossible to find options that would make an avatar truly ugly.


While RoeDudes and Au Ra aren't my thing, they can still look Cool/Kakkoii/Ikemen to the right person, which makes all the difference.

Personally, I love Elezen and Femroes (super pale skin options FTW) but find the other races/sexes average or unappealing. It's just a matter of taste. My character is 100% a self-insert; I even like the longer necks and posture/animations. I've had this appearance from the very start and can't imagine looking any other way.

Pffff, beauty is subjective, pal. Though I will say most Viera faces look too derpy for me, with much apologies to Viera.

And technically we have older face models, which a friend of mine had used for his Raen to make him deliberately an ugly old grouch. XD

Really though, I see plenty of ordinary and elderly NPCs (especially starting in HW content) so it rarely bothers me much. But of course it is odd to me as well how the majority look anime-nice and less Game of Thrones level "ugly". But the Final fantasy series was always known to be pretty even back when they were just pixel and polygon graphics. *still snrking at how everyone looks in original FFVII*

Yeah what the person above said. In addition, I'm like 2 feet tall and have to stand around people who have an unhealthy obsession with the 2B bottom piece when they character and backside ain't even that hot every time I enter a dungeon. How do you think I feel.

I find the hairstyle you choose has a lot to do with attractiveness. There are a couple styles I use on Highlander with a beard that look really good. But on a Midlander they just don't look right due to their smaller frame and lack of a good, close shaved beard option.

Well, I'm OK with having only good looking people in this game. Leave the realism for the real world.

while midlander and viera are my favorite races, i dont really see other races as ugly initially, but man, people sure can make them as such.

Humans love to exaggerate our features, beaty included. Thus most works of art that portrays humans ends up being aesthetically pleasing with the exception being for arts made with certain social commentary in mind.

Yes its a necro thread but it sort of made me laugh. Let me introduce you to BDO online. YOu can make some very interesting characters with the character creator there.

In my fantasy everyone is an 14 out of a max of 10!

I'm not, a magical anime game should have cute and beautiful creatures in it, but if it makes you feel better, you can play a roe, they are designed to be ugly. Traditionally in fiction, the good are beautiful and the evil are ugly....this needs to be written in stone!

I think female Roes are really pretty.

This whole thread is kind of pointless even because "the beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
Some people consider certain races to be pretty and some others - ugly. I can see 2 characters of the same race using the exact same face but depending on the facial features, colors and a hairstyle they use I can think one of them is pretty and the other one is ugly.

There are no characters or races that are inheritely ugly or pretty. There are only different opinions.
