Getting rid of surnames

combining the two names would be no different then leaving them apart, I really dont see the down side to having Surnames, this was you can have w/e name you want. sure you have to have a 1st and last which i hated at first cause i wanted to keep my FFXI name "Demo" on hades and cerberus but i was not able to cause any last name would look stupid after "Demo" however its been over a year i got use to the new name.

in order to change the system to allow optional surnames it would require some coding. yes test server might support it (idk where that comes from, all the test pics i seen have 1st and last names)


it would interfere with the chat system though, /tell user would sent to user but /tell user micuser would be to a different person, if you cant see the last name you wouldnt know what to type for it and thus could not /t them anything unless you highlight them and /t <t> :p

Essentially by allowing say half the population to have "original" (singular) names, you allow for the current variations on that name, and the singular name to exist along side it. (=more options)

At the same time. You are erasing a lot of screen clutter that maybe shouldn't/wouldn't be there with the option of one name. (like my surname name, for example)

let alone freeing up a ridiculous amount of space in the chat log....

Yeah I would have preferred an option. My character names are always just whatever is near me. My FFXIV character - I had car oil next to my shoes. Mobil 1 Synthetic. Pumas. Synthetic Puma was born. Do i see the benefits of surnames, of course! I think they are quite cool for games to have. Just would rather it be an option.

Haha. I used to have "I love ... lamp" moments like that too.

I suppose it could have been optional, but I think having it non-optional keeps everyone on an even playing field (which is important because everyone should have to abide the same rules, convenient or otherwise).

Changing it now would probably be a waste of time anyway.

the inconvenience of it is probably what gets me the most, especially in lag city, or when meeting a player who really wasn't sure what to name himself.

I don't care about the beauty of your eloquently thought out name. If I cant repeat it within 2mins of meeting you you're not getting an invite from me any time soon.

The fact many people will admit an option for a last name would be nice is sentiment enough.

haha if your computer is lagging due to the names ... "theres your sign" might want to play on something stronger then a NES :p. sorry i mean your machine no offense i just had the nes pop into my mind and HAD to find a way to compare lag due to names with the NES ;P

realistically there is no viable reason to change the system (why fix what isn't broke?) its 1 word more of typing. adding this into the game would come with the price that SE would have to offer all the players (like myself) that have played since alpha, beta, and CE launch (septemebr22 2010) the option to change our main characters name. and that would be a lot of programming that i'm sure they would rather use the time and resources to add/fix aspects of XIV.

if they do ever implement it then heck ya /goodbye Dante Mccloud... "<Welcome Back!> Demo"

I don't get the hate for surnames it's not hard to talk to someone in tells especially if you are responding. you can just hit CTRL -R to respond, and if you use the auto translate the game keeps track of the last 30 people you sent a tell/sent a tell to you. Just hit your TAB key push your up arrow once, and click on Audience and there they are. I love surnames, and hey they give more...I'm going to say it! Immersion! That word again!

I disagree cause its a pointless feature to worry or ask about, like jump we dont need that by any means... XI was A HUGE win and didn't let WoWer's jump (thank you god of gaming for not putting jump in XI)

now if it was a topic about adding new jobs that aren't silly (geomancer = lame) (samurai or ninja = sweet i gets a katana!!!) then heck ya i'd be spilling the forums with your posts helping the cause

Hell, you see all they are adjusting with the UI. It seemed more relevant than ever.

And yes, they have realised the fan boys love that shit. I'm not looking forward to being nerfed as an archer as soon as katana's hit the scene.... you know SE... (along with the rest of the "dps")

It has something to do with the game because these are the forums that go with the game.

This is why they are called the Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone Forums.

They're only on your screen because you looked in their direction. They were just standing around talking, you can't blame them for your camera control :P

But seriously you've gone off your own topic and now just seem to be angry. I apologise if I've antagonised you from the volume of posting I make, I just like to chat and socialise so I tend to be a bit of a chatterbox on forums.

Many have agreed that making an option whether or not to add a surname in the character creation would be nice and many hope S.E will consider this in future changes.

As such this thread does not appear to be able to offer any extra input to go into the debate so let's just let this thread die before it gets as bad as the 'immersion' threads.

I know sometimes I may seem like I'm trolling or just being arguementative, but my way of wording things sometimes makes my opinion sounds more like a definite rather than a thought.

I was by choice, nothing forced me into the decision.

After a few failed relationships I got the basic idea of what it entailed and decided it wasn't my kind of thing.

And as it happens, yes I probably am free on friday, but if it is a definite will be decided today when I go for my job interview :p

I agree for more options but I don't agree with this one. No point in having both options at this point. They could make it where you have the option of turning surnames off visibly but there is no point to not have a surname other than just not wanting one for some reason. If that is the case make it as short as possible. It is only the people who have long spelled hard to remember names that bother me when you try to think out how to spell out their names and it makes it harder since there is now /sea all system atm. Most people rarely have problems remembering my name or how to spell it and I am sure that is the case with Konata Chibi and others, easy stuff.
