SWEEET! ! !!!!
Oh wow, they are considering adding interesting and new avenues of gameplay. I guess there is a chance for FFXIV after all.
But as I already mentioned in this thread (I think), some improvements to the water-rendering will be needed.
Currently the water isn't too great. I shudder to think what it would look like from a vantage point beneath the surface or floating on top. That seems to be a bigger hurdle from my perspective than the issue of creating new animations.
Also, did SE use an editive layer for their animations? If so, they can recycle some animations, I guess. Limiting the weapons useable under water would help alleviate some workload too.
sunken underwater temple that leads to levithan hnm fight . awesome. actually swimming to it. no.
I do have some suggestions for the ability to swim or even climb. For climbing while you can't make every spot with a rocky surface accessible you could make it where your gear determines where you can climb, but you have to be the right rank in order to use it. I mean you could try making it skill based but since this game actually lacks a skill base system it may be better to base your climbing ability on your gear.
You could however maybe make test that increase your climbing abilities where with the right gear and perception you can climb to certain areas. Basically the concept behind climbing could be to find hidden areas in dungeons as well as access new areas on the world map. If you wanted to add a bit of a challenge to it you could makea semi mini-game based on the challenge of the climb and add variables like rockslides or a mob trying to knock you off while clmbing. If you fail a climb there could be a recovery period before you try again but overall there is potential to make climbing an interesting concept that can add a lot of depth to the game.
As for swimming I would suggest you make sure you put "gear" guidelines into the system is people actually swim, however. Instead of swimming what if you compromise and make battle-submarines insteads which are created through the teamwork of many crafts. The battle-submarines could vary from party size from a 4-party based sub to an 8 party based one. You could also add 1 person subs however I think adding the option to allow for NPCs to control 4-8 could work also. Maybe you could do it where you only have the license to control a 1 person sub or a 4 person sub if you have 4 people controlling. However as you gain prestige you are given the opportunity to enroll NPCs to take the helm if others aren't around
After a certain rank you get certified to use an 8 person sub which gives you the ability to explore even more of the udnerwater land and possible ruins to be discovered.
The battle concept could work like this
1 person:Fragile, fast moving, "Exploration/Battle commands"
4 person:varied models, basic model focuses on seats for 1 explorer, 2 battles and 1 digger
8 person: varied models, basic model 1 radar, 2 explorers, 3 battle, 2 diggers
Basically each person is given a specific role based on what I gave above you have
Explorer
Battle
digger
radar
Now the abilities of these are based on ones current discipline. The way abilities are distributed are basically
Explorer:hand
Battle:war
digger:land
radar:magic
While you don't have to be those classes to use those positions, they are the prefered class for those seats which grant special abilities if you are the proper class.
Basically if you aren't the prefered discipline you'll get generic abilities based on your class rank up to whatever it is, however if you are the proper discipline you'll also gain abilities specific to that class based on your rank, so there will be room to actually fiddle around with what each class has to offer in terms of support on the submarine.
The main concept of the submarine overall would be to limit the overall stress of having to animated swimming animations. While swimming itself may sound nice let's be honest unless you plan to add combat to swimming what's the actual point of swimming when in the end you'll also have to add a breathing timer is you allow for underwater diving. It would be more logical to create submarines that allow you to explore rather then swimming. Plus you can't expect a discipline of warrior to swim in his heavy armor and risk getting it rusted lol. The safest method for an adventurer would be to go in a vehicle not swim and leave themselves defenseless to attacks by pirate ships.
But ya these are just suggestions, I hope they can be of help if you consider creating underwater exploration I do believe this concept will be a lot more fun then looking at the eye candy of how much time you took to make fluid swimming animation for each race in their gear.
FFX had some interesting and fun underwater segments/fights, as well as other games of course. Wouldn't mind swimming down to a few temples that need exploring. With how combat works in this game it would be a little tough to do underwater though.
I can see this coming. Leviathan battle! I said it here first folks!
I can't wait to see the day that oldschool players have to rage quit
JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA
THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME
Wow, what great news. Can't wait for swimming. YOSHI-P!! Let us climb like in Assassin's Creed - on rocks. Not buildings, but rocks, like the big mountains in Coerthas.
I want to climb on buildings too
I'm going to the top of Uldah and dive to the ground, make oldschool players annoy
You're already annoying sounding like a broken record
i can deal with swimming, but underwater combat makes even less sense than blasting things with "Fire III"
it just looks stupid to me when my pyromancer in Rift has to do underwater fighting.
water resistance
water extinguishes heat - ash colored bubbles would be needed
moving exerts extra energy underwater - im assuming the character would be holding his breath?
camera angles tend to be annoying when your near the surface
meh, then again what the hell do i know, im pro restriction free jump feature...
I cant wait to bust out mah swimmies and speedo!!
In favor for swimming and water content!
On top of being an awesome opportunity for thrilling new mechanics,
it may actually help to weed out some of the nay-sayers from 1980.
Win-win.
Wife, bring me my yellow swimming undies. The tight ones.

wootz ore! Yoshi is actually taking underwater content seriously and with an open mind  am very excited to hear more news about this in the future, especially if they try to use motion capture for the animations haha. Too many ideas and suggestions floating around my head for underwater content so will just leave the topic with a personal thumbs up to the dev team for now.
I don't think AC climbing would work in this game but I would love to see Area Specific Climbing, like having to scale a sheer cliff to reach a temple or something would be cool. But not free climbing that would prolly not go well.
LOL SRSLY~ what is the point in scaling walls in a Final Fantasy game.
Late getting to this thread, but if they did add swimming that would increase the diverse areas we would be able to explore. And I am all for that!
How would that be out of place in the game? Everything we do has specific types of gear attached to it be it close combat, ranged combat, magic, crafting or gathering. I'm all for Scuba gear! Just put the rest of your crap on your retainer(s) while you do the underwater stuff. At the most it's what, a set of armor more? Just make it magic and it works fine.
I mean I guess they could do a lame cop-out like a potion or spell.
Or it could just be like FFX where it's simply understood everyone can breath underwater lol. No lore that says we can't that I can think of!
Having problems breathing underwater? Just get yourself an Underwater Materia. problem solved!
YEOUCH! Seafood soup!
I'm late coming to this thread, but I'm glad I found it.
Swimming and under water quests/exploration sounds awesome. I'd love for this game to have a more "open world" feel, as opposed to the way it is now where you can't jump or go in water.
As i stated a simple breathing piece that you'd equip to your head slot would suffice. My thread i was referring to was about rpgs in history needing gear to access areas. Dragon warrior was my reference and you always needed a special pair of boots or something to get to the next higher lvl area. I dont see why this would be out of place. Having an area that requires everyone in the group to have gotten an item makes the game fun.
Another idea i had would be to have missions were you had to trick beastmen by wearing a goblin mask so you could walk by the guards at the entrance of a cave or something.
underwater materia equipped in your armor is the only solution!
lol i jk. maybe
Bring on the underwater Content. This content does not have to be combat, But Salvaging type content for Limsa Fishers or Swimming in under water caverns to get to secret area's. Exploring Ship wreaks and plunder, while keeping hidden from Laviathan lol! I think the non-combat options are enless, and maybe some kind of under water dangers that can be avoided via some kind of under water skills. I believe an underwater city is not out of the question either.
Use your imagination people!
Yes to swimming, but only if you can drown. I'm tired of the bs 'explanations' that you know magic that lets you breathe under water for indefinite amounts of time.... nor any magic scroll, pendant, curse, magic bubble etc.
It would be nice, for once, seeing your character with a gas tank or some odd diving gear.....
It just totally makes me go 'yeah right....' when I can afk my char under water :/
i think its hilarious how almost no one is against swimming as if underwater battles dont look rediculous... yet everyone and their mom argues against jumping because of how rediculous it looks.
i guess its that jumping can be done anywhere therefore has a chance to be in your face as to where swimming can only be done... in water - over there --->
oh well, maybe i can avoid underwater quests in this game unlike other MMOs.
Underwater content would need creatures with a head of a Chocobo and a body of a sea horse for us to ride.
