Bad PvPers can't get the best PvP gears, because you have to have a high arena rating to get them. If you're bad, you wont achieve that rating. If someone wants to play PvP a lot, I feel they completely deserve to get at least a somewhat useable reward from it. You have to take time out of one mode to play the other- nobody is going to do that if they don't get SOMETHING for their time.

He did say this- but you also shouldn't be at a disadvantage if you DO wish to do PvP. The two sides of the coin can coexist in harmony if done right.

PvP gear vs PvE gear

You guys want to know the big difference? Nothing unless they completely copy WoW.

FFXI you used PvE gear and mixed and matched for the play style you wanted and it got people buying off the AH for unusual items that hardly ever sold. There is no need to create bull crap PvP gear! If you want defense then stack Vit, if you want attack stack Str etc.

If they want PvP gear they might as well just ignore gear and make it for its looks rather than stats because in the end two warriors in full PvP gear are going to be the same damn thing and the only difference will be the PLAY SKILL and not the Gear Creativity Skill. PvP gear will create Gear > Skill just like WoW has and though Gear should matter it should not matter as much as Skill.

Follow FFXI PvP system for a well balanced PvP game.

PvP gear is not "bull crap." FFXI does not make for great examples because Ballista, despite how fun I personally found it to be, was a failure for a simple reason: there was no incentive to participate. The game balance was decent, and I loved the importance of group cohesion to it- the problems Ballista had were 1) accessibility (pain in the ass to participate) and 2) lack of reward (temporary titles that go away after a week and taking a little of your friend's gil is the only reward). There aren't even any trophy awards e.g. items that have no gameplay value but indicate your PvP prowess to others. The only such items came from the ballista royale, which only happened once, so only a handful of people across the entire game posess these items (which again, are nothing more than trophies)

You can have PvP gear. It can be balanced with PvE gear. There is no reason not to have it. If you don't have it, nobody will do it, and it will fall into obscurity and all efffort spent on it will have been wasted. Nobody will play content that has no shinies.

Because it's not world PvP, PvP is just another peice of content / ride in the theme park. People who do well in it should be rewarded. Should it be better than the stuff you get for beating the hardest things in the game? of course not. But it should have some use to somebody, or nobody will want to play it.

The reason there are different sets of PvP and PvE gear in MMOs is "butthurt" prevention.

Want to see someone get mad? Let some PvP gear set out DPS a full time PvE raider set on NM. Reverse the situation and have a PvE gear set utterly destroy people in PvP. Full time PvPer will cry how best PvP gear is from raiding amd how they do not want to raid to be good at PvP.

That is why lots of MMOs have a "PvP" stat that only effects PvP. Keep mostly gear set used in the play areas they are earned.

Before you go, "Why would PvP gear and PvE gear being interchangeable bad?" I'll give you an example.

Back in the days of vanilla WoW, I raided. The best DPS gear at that time was battle ground warlord gear. My guild master require DPS people to go PvP for this gear for our raids. Needless to say, many guilds did this and many people were not happy about feeling the need to PvP to build PvE dps gear.

I know what some of you are thinking, "That was the players that were enforcing that you go PvP to build raid gear." and yes that is true. As a developer, it is their job to foresee such things and prevent situations that will hinder and interfere will a player's fun, even if that is from players.

I don't feel this needs to be discouraged. It is a good thing that collecting items from different activities of different times is beneficial to performing well in other events. It sure as hell isn't a requirement, and as you said, it was the player's decision to ask those things of people. If the other people in the guild don't like it, they can form their own guild of players that prefer to take other paths.

You can achieve reasonable balance in gearing without restricting rewards to the environment in which they were obtained.

Because if you have rewards restrcted in this way take the time to get a nice reward from either PvP or PvE, it just further locks you into only playing that content more, stifling variety and limiting gear options as the developers are forced to build multiple completely isolated sets of gear.

The only real reason to limit the quality of PvP rewards is "rigging the system" but if you use style of event where the PvP is ongoing and you can jump in/out at will, or you use a match-based system where groups are formed randomly (possibly weighted by skill level), you can pretty much eliminate rigging as long as the playerbase is of a reasonable size. In WoW, other than teaming up with your friends you pretty much never battle the same people twice in the battlegrounds- so you can't easily rig the system. Therefore I don't consider making PvP unrewarding because of possible abuse reasonable.

Personally, I'll probably play the content regardless of the rewards as long as it's fun, but I can't help but keep looking at how FFXI's PvP failed not because it was poorly designed but because there was no reward, and I don't want that to happen here.

Lets just have gear without abbreviations slapped on the front of it.

I think pvp gear and pve gear should be pretty close in quality regarding stats and should be able to be used anywhere. My thought on this is because if somebody is going for pvp gear, It most likely will take a long time to get their entire best possible pvp set at the time, same goes to somebody going after best possible pve gear, again will take somebody a long time to get their full set. After a pvp player has gotten his full set he would most likely be leaning more towards pve content just to mix things up for a bit. And being able to use his PVP gear in PVE instances would allow them to not only enjoy the new gear they worked hard for, but have decent gear for hard instance allowing them to get into better groups. I mean pvp gear most likely be tweaked more towards pvp applications but should still be good enough to use in pve content (above average)

Just an idea I thought I’d throw out there.

How about having score multipliers based on the gear you’re wearing for pvp. So basically if your wearing the very best gear in the game then your score multiplier will be x1.0. But if your wearing slightly lower grade gear then you could get a score multiplier of x1.2 up to say x1.5 (or put another way, an extra 20%-50% score bonus).

So players at a disadvantage due to their gear set get a bonus to their final score.

It will also determine the good players to the well geared players. You could go into pvp purposefully with really crap gear to get the best multiplier, but unless you actually score some points the multiplier won’t help you all that much (x1.5 bonus to 0 is still 0). So some skill will be needed. It’ll be a bit of trial and error to see what you can handle.

I think this with a ranking system to put you up against like skilled players could be quite interesting.

How long into the game with PvP added will we hear people screaming NERF!!!! on a class/job that just wrecked them. Which is exactly why I never wanted to see PvP be a major part of the game and it be more like FFXI type PvP where after fight we all would say good fight and nobody would complain.
