[Dawntrail Benchmark] Character bodies are the same as before

On an MMORPG?! I mean, one of the most important aspects of these games is the sense of community. It seems absurd to me to offer that just to get an improvement on bodies, an improvement that concerns very few players.

Sure you likely won’t see the lower quality bodies on the boob window of the level 50 DRG armour because it’s surrounded by armour but there are plenty of male glams that are for all intents and purposes shirtless (and this is not just joke glams, this includes dungeon glams). This also extends to many arm pieces and many pants that are rather short because they are designed to be worn with high boots which you may not choose to

I’m not sure why you jump to “you got something you want instead of being grateful you just pick something else to complain about” as a reason for why we feel this way

It’s just odd to upscale faces and leave the bodies so low quality when the faces were already higher quality than the bodies

It's not strange, it's a question of the number of polygons. And yes, there's a hierarchy to be made:

- If we were on a game like Blade and Souls, the body would be just as important as the head (... need I explain why?). On FF, naked glamours are present, but they don't make up the majority.
- Increasing the number of polygons can lead to serious problems, such as the need to reduce the number of players on screen. Or lags. I think it's fair to say that it's objectively more important to have a fluid game where you can see people, not a game where you can't see the people but, by golly, the ones you do see have divine bodies!
- And finally, there's nothing illogical about updating the head but not the body: as I said earlier, it's a question of order of importance. Most players play without helmets. So we're sacrificing body quality for the sake of performance.

All I know is viera still don't have FFXII ears; a literal crime.

Yes. But converting the game engine to DirectX 12/Vulkan will be a huge effort if they want to do it right. The kind of programming for DirectX 12/Vulkan is very different compared to DirectX 11. The previous iterations of DirectX were more or less cumulative. DirectX 12/Vulkan is something completely new. You cannot reuse existing code for it.

I think the only race 100% benefitting from the graphical upgrade completely is the female Hrothgar since they are totally created within the new graphics engine from head to toe. Happy I am becoming one because fidelity wise, they are now going to be one of the best in-game.

Yes, mostly, but not necessarily in terms of the body surface. The fur patches on shoulders always looked a bit stiff on Hrothguys already, but it wasn't as super obvious because of the old lighting system. However, with the new one, the fur patches on both Hrothguys and Hrothgals looks really greasy with some colours (esp dark ones). As much as my characters tend to show no skin anyway, considering there has never been much customization with Hrothgars to begin with, many Hrothgar players choose at least partially revealing gear to show off their fur patterns and all. I sure as hell will do so with my soon to be Hrothgal alt. Would be nice if she wouldn't look as unshowered as Estiniens armor. :D

(And yes, I looked at the Benchmark video, too, not just character creator.)

We'll see how it's going to be with the new Benchmark (let alone the actual game), but I hope they adjust it a little bit.

In an alternate timeline, we have a MMORPG with...
BDO-level of graphic fidelity and combat system
FFXIV's monetization model (you may not like this but I have yet to seen a MMORPG gameplay progression isn't gated by amount of 0s in your bank account nor where the gameplay progression isn't decided by lootboxes and gachas luck)
GW2's immersive overworld design
WoW's insane amount of player population

at this point i would be pretty happy to have:
