Realistic equipments or More fantasy equipments?

I want fantasy but with some realism, like in XI. I'd hate it if they had bulky armor with tons of spikes or colors that looked off (like glowy kinda, /any korean MMO). I'd rather a bit more realistic armor design with impressive patterns, kinda like homam from XI and any aht urhgan gear.

Just wondering, would it be the character designer who creates the designs for equipment, etc?

I really like Akihiko Yoshida's designs in Vagrant Story: 1, 2, 3, 4.

I like the medieval/steam-punk style the equipment has, though.

hm id like to see some gear that defines the class & stands out from other classes abit more.
With some minor colour changes, adds with diffrent levs & attributes.
Something like the current Canvas > Velveteen robes.

However, both THM & CNJ use em both, the only thing that stands out
to define what class it by a quick look is the Weapon they carry.

But, from the latest design's that Yoshi-P showed us... mmm baby i cant wait for those. ^^

Still, id also like to see some staves containing a crystal ball / plain crystal or something.
Maybe some added glow, sparkle inside them, reflecting lights etc, nothing over the edge.

Bring back the proper elemental staves for the mages!!!
I dont care if its a cactuar on a stick.

WoW's weapon glows / enchants were over the edge in means of glow intensity.

in terms of armor design: Well as long as I dont put on the same set of heavy plate armor as a dude and get a steel bikini i'm cool with whatever.

Armor design is more a matter of taste than style... i believe SE did well regarding armor as such, but i was disappointed with robes. Given that FFXI robes were kinda strange and followed the same pattern all the time, i'm sure no mage likes wearing dirty washcloths and potato sacks, waving dirty wooden sticks to cast spells.

Well, i'm sure some probably like the idea, but every piece of equipment, regarding of style, should be made with the idea that players want to look cool in-game more than they want to look realistic.

This is the core of the problem.

I think the style of Tactics Ogre is really akin to Final Fantasy XIV; imagine if we had equipment like this?
