I imagine part of that cheapen comment also came from the fact we used to have a plan for open world primal summoning, where a FC could bring out a full strength primal onto the playing field. So having a bunch of other variants would probably make that feel a little silly lol. Although I haven't heard about that in a long time (primal summoning), so I imagine it's shelved and dusty idea somewhere at the office now.
I think overall it was a mistake to go so down on the tree to prop up the "real" primals though and I'm glad they're going back a bit to the "summoner" that at least I know and love.
One of my key arguments way back when (years ago) was that the summoner has been a healer, a blackmage, and just a summoner, the summons have been one off spells and full on pets, and so summoner's only true consistency through all the FF games is they've always looked amazing (and usually did amazing things too, although they usually had pretty heavy fall off late game). So that was my core argument on why summoner should be getting they're neat eye catching stuff back because the only core part of summoner was calling crazy things down to do more crazy things lol. Which of course meant when I saw ahk morn and demi-bahamut I was quite pleased, and am hopeful they'll continue with enhancing (what I think) the only true core part of being a summoner (summoner is a visual statement about calling greater beings down to do something more than anything else, since everything else about the job is variable- its been a pet class, a healer class, nuker, and what have you).
