Levelling seems messed up

This is exactly why I don't recommend this game to any of my friends. I don't think it's fair to ask someone to pour all that time into doing over 300 quests, just so that they can reach and endgame that they might not even like.

The only reason I play this is because I've already played all of the other popular MMOs, so much that I got bored of them. Plus a lot of them have a weak endgame. But in a lot of aspects, they're leagues ahead of FFXIV. So it sucks when you take that, and pile up a bunch of obligatory quests on top that make people feel like quitting before they even get to the things that make this game enjoyable.

You do not do the 300 quests in order to reach the endgame. You do the 300+ quests because they are fun, and doing them is called playing the game.
The so-called endgame? That's where you take a pause from the game and wait for new content to appear.

There are players that only care about Savage and Ultimate.
They do those 300 quest in order to be able to do that Savage and Ultimate.

You'd think at some point they'd question whether they're getting their money's worth, having no interest in 99% of the game...

Only thing I did in WoW was raiding.
Of course I first had to lvl my character and when there's an expansion you have to level again and some pre-stuff work before raid you have to do.
Once that was done just raid for up to 6 days / week for +5 hours. Hunting for servers firsts and always increasing your scores on the ranking websites.

Couldn't care less about the side stuff that didn't interest me.

Actually ffxiv is not a bad game, it has many many things that are nice for the game like this, the free-class choosing is one of them and could make you stay for good.
