I agree, you'll probably always have a couple high level options (and with XIV currently, those options are pretty much Electrum or Lightning). I guess what I am saying is down the road some insanely awesome pieces of gear might bite the dust simply cause the base damage is too low. I would rather have the utility (i.e., like XI and elemental staves, you can be level 95 and still find uses for them?).

EDIT: It's even already that way with XIV. You don't see any Thaums running around with Fire Brands for leet fire damage; however, if the Fire Brand supported highest tier materia you can bet your ass I would have one for some AOE fun. :)

That's the thing though -- why would a level 50 mage, with higher stats and high level versus other monster do less damage simply because they have a lesser weapon equipped..? It didn't even work that way in FFXI -- A level 99 BLM will outnuke a level 10 blm using Fire I even while being naked because of other factors.

It's deluded because she (and you?) focused on the melee stats and joined a discussion of how INT stats DO affect damage, which is crazy delusional because because neither of those FACTS takes anything from the OP's central point. All that does is add confusion, it's off-topic, and is an example of blind white knighting. It's white knighting because you choose to ignore the opportunity to see a flaw the game has and join in the request for a solution and instead back up WHAT IS a flaw in this game that truly does have great potential. You don't serve FFXIV's greater growth by making posts like that on the official forums, all you do is serve whatever emotional attachment you have to accepting things desperately.

Why not? XI has nothing to do with this. Of course two differently leveled mages will do different damage.

If a MRD uses a Lv1 weapon, they do less damage. Why shouldn't the same apply to mages? If you need some reasoning for it so it doesn't break your immersion, then... lets say the staff is a conduit through which they cast their spell, and more powerful staves make the spell more powerful.

Which, again, would break stat scaling, because they would have to go under the assumption that current damage is done with the best weapon available, and then subtracting from that. In other words, if you're not rocking the best 2H weapon in the game, prepare to see your damage/healing get nerfed very noticeably, and receive nothing in return except the piece of mind that, "Well, now I have to reason to hunt for that new weapon!"

My idea? Reduce the melee stat damage to near zero for all mage weapons, and forward those freed up stat points (or whatever SE goes by) into greatly increasing the stats the higher level weapons have. Again, this isn't a new problem for MMO mages -- they either never notice a weapon upgrade, or they immediately notice it, because the stat bonuses are far more exorbitant than similarly leveled melee weapons. I'll agree, the higher level weapons could definitely use more punch and pizzazz (melding is a great perk, but that shouldn't be their biggest selling point), but the OP's suggestion would cause far more problems than it would solve. Which is to say, it wouldn't solve any problems at all.

Indeed -- But how would it make any sense for your magic damage to go down at level 50 simply because you're using a level 1 weapon? That was my point. I never heard of an MMO that calculated damage to ignore your level completely.

It doesn't have to ignore your level, but your weapon ought to play some part in the calculation of damage (aside from the obvious additional stats on the weapon).

Since you obviously played XI, do you remember how people reacted to relic weapons for BLM? It went something like "LOL THAT'S CRAP". I don't want to see that happen again.

As soon as elemental staves were added to XI, nobody cared about any higher-level weapons for mages. I don't want to see that happen again.

That's because Elemental Staves (especially HQ ones) were completely and utterly OP and should have never went live like that. They were far, far above the tier they should have been -- and the ability to switch out gear mid fight made them highly useful for niche reasons, rather than the "one weapon fits all" that later weapons were. With luck, nothing like that will happen here, for simple virtue of learning from past mistakes (pipe dream, I know).
