What FF character could be a good trial?

Just imagine what a letdown fighting Omega itself would be in V12 if we had to fight her right beforehand in V11. The memories of the struggle to beat her... only to have her take pity on me and walk away out of boredom. No regrets on reloading my save over and over until I scraped through though. I don't know if SE would have a plain human as an enemy though. Even villains borrowed from other games have all been beasts, primal entities, or had distinctly inhuman features. The only one that comes close is Halicarnassus in V3 and she's still giant, otherworldly, and dressed like she got into an accident with a costume collection.

Anima from FFX, imo.

I'd love to see a mechanic that -- however briefly -- made the group have to perform upside down in some sick, underworldly plane.

Well, I always imagined a fight with T.G. Cid taking place in Gridania. The fight would be more of a "survive X minutes while doing at least Y amount of damage and maneuvering him to location Z". Success will have him pull back and prepare to unleash some major damage-

Only to be interrupted by Odin. The last you see them, they are having a running duel into the forest. (The actual last shot would have a scene in Buscarron's Druthers where they are sitting at a table drinking, laughing, and singing bawdy songs.)

If I had to do a themed set....

Final Fantasy IV
1st Round - fight the four Archfiends in order, one at a time, like in Midas2. Winning each fight also awards you with a blue crystal.

2nd Round - the Magus Sisters. Notable because they can revive each other (or maybe just Cindy can), you will be short a tank, and you get a hint from defeating each one, and another at the end.

3rd Round - 4 Archfiends Redux. You fight the four Archfiends.... at the same time. The fight can be simplified by tanking "opposing" elementals together, because they interfere with the other and keep the number of big attacks down. One way to interpret one of the Magus Sisters' hints. So, Earth and Wind go to one tank, and Fire and Water to another. A fun minor bit is that Rubicante does heal you before the fight (you are filled up HP/TP/MP-wise, your moves are off cooldown, and your gear is repaired). You get a red/orange crystal each time you beat an Archfiend.

4th Round - Zemus. Starts off by stealing all 8 crystals from you, and taking NO damage from anything. Has a second "life bar" indicating grip strength. Each time it empties, Zemus drops a crystal. More than one crystal can be on the ground at the same time, though if left alone Zemus can pick them back up. The crystals have to be placed on one of eight pedestals around the arena (minor hints on the ground, as well as what the Magus Sisters say, point out the exact location for each one). The longer the fight goes, the bigger Zemus gets, and the more towers/meteors occur. Placing a crystal in a "good" spot puts a brief pause on the Zemus's attacks. Having a matching pair of crystals (blue fire across from orange water, for example) in "good" spots makes Zemus turn smaller and actually deals damage to his life bar. Putting a crystal in a "bad" spot causes minor party-wide damage and the crystal popping back out. Once the final crystal is placed, Zemus is stunned, and proceeds to glitch, before fading away into specks of light. Omega mentions an error in the system, like something else was there.

Unless you are playing Savage, in which case the body slumps down, the back splits open, and Zeromus pulls itself out. I cannot think of any fun crystal mechanics after that point, though. Just "try not to die".

If I was to do Final Fantasy XII....

1st Round - Trickster - Giant white chocobo - spams healing, shields, and choco meteors. Annoying because he keeps running around.

2nd Round - Gilgamesh - "Have we met? I feel like I should know if you should know if I should know you."

3rd Round - Omega Weapon - one that looks like the FF12 version - Omega admits that it was a terminal unit deployed long ago.

4th Round - Yiazmat - though with the HP heavily nerfed.

None of the Espers, because I kind of want them for either "Return to Ivalice" or more high-level Voidsent. Or else I would have had Chaos, Hashmal, and Ultima instead for the first, second, and fourth rounds.

Go look up how long the battle took for the first Absolute Virtue clear on FFXI. You want the original clear not the one after they patched HNMs to shorten battles in response to complaints about the AV fight length.

I'd prefer they keep other games' protagonists out. Better yet, they should keep all characters who are part of other games' storylines out of this one. (I'm already upset they brought in Exdeath, Omega's copying tech nonwithstanding, and would rather they not repeat that mistake.) Characters like Cid who get re-imagined as a different person in each game are fine, they're part of what ties the series together. But main protagonists and main villains, or really any characters who are linked to the story they came from, should be off limits. (I can make allowances for brief crossover events, but only by treating them as non-canon.)

There are plenty of Final Fantasy spinoffs that bring in heroes and villains from multiple games. The key word there being "spinoffs". Final Fantasy XIV isn't supposed to be a spinoff. It's supposed to be a main series title in its own right. As such, it should remain separate from the other games. Both XI and XIV are already treading close to the edge of being spinoffs anyway just by changing genres from single player RPG to MMORPG. SE should be careful not to knock it over to the wrong side of that line.

If this thread were discussing who you'd like to fight in one or another of the series' spinoff games, then I could agree with several of the suggestions, as some of them sound like a lot of fun. Or if SE had never claimed this would be a main series title, and had named it Final Fantasy Online II rather than Final Fantasy XIV, then I could agree with them. But as is, I can't.

Random thought

What about a battle with a party of main storyline characters from the FF Brave Exvius mobile game such as Rain (tank), Laswell (melee DPS), Fina (Healer), and Lid (Hybrid melee/ranged DPS)?

Granted I think coding AI would be a nightmare to make them function like an actual party.

The Four Archfiends are something I hope to see soon, especially with Endwalker's heavy influence from FF4.
