Should glamour have job restrictions or not?

People should keep in mind that you've been given a compromise, a movement from complete restriction to some freedom, and that yes there is indeed a slope but that does not mean there is no argument to prevent running further down it a full speed.

If complete lockdown was at the top of the hill and entire freedom at the bottom, compromise existed somewhere between. Yes of course some people want to hit the bottom of the hill, which is fine, but I just want to remind that the fact you've moved some element down the hill does not mean "hey there is no reason to stay somewhere in the middle, none at all" - at least for some people. Although its the take an inch they want a mile thing comes from, never satiated at compromise until they've got their end desire in mind at first.. Which I'm not really sure I'd call bad, but I would like SE to not run down the hill but find a middle ground somewhere. The whole "oh but there is already weird things in the game, so why not add 10,000 more" is not a really good argument in my eyes, since I don't value the bottom of the hill goal in the first place.

Not suggesting everyone has to want compromise (I know specifically some people don't care/want that), just hopefully sharing that not everyone is looking at this the same way - and why using that as an argument towards those people (like myself) would be rather meaningless. You could make more exaggerated examples of course on self defense, ownership of weapons, whatever - just trying to share the point of different perspective. When someone says "we already have weird stuff" that doesn't come as a ring of sudden realization - that just means to me: yeah so be happy for the compromise that already exists. lol :P

Many have made good points so far. I like the suggestion about keeping glamours restricted based on job levels. This would incentivize people to level more jobs they wouldn't otherwise bother with and that's a good thing for the game, right? There was also a suggestion to delay the access to other roles' glamours and to either remove the restriction later or let people craft recolors. Personally I would find such a delay redundant and the crafting option doesn't guarantee the right colors or access to all pieces. The hat I posted in the OP is a good example of this since it's still not available to other roles.

Someone mentioned DoH/DoL gear being left to waste in the current system and I totally agree! Some of them look very nice and would offer more everyday clothing options. I think the worst part is that Korean servers get an option to buy these gear sets as glamourable to all jobs from the Mog Station. I would much prefer an upgrade to the glamour system than being offered a way to spend money to bypass these rigid limitations.

A few posters have a viewpoint that opening glamours cross-role would dilute the roles too much or look silly. I wonder if adding more job-specific gear, artifact style, would be a good compromise. They would add to job identities and if made well they could encourage more people to wear lore appropriate gear (plate for tanks etc). Of course there is the issue that other jobs sharing the equipped base gear look like hobos while the main job is sporting artifact gear. One solution to this is convincing SE to care about making glamour bound to job and not the item. Another solution is making artifact gear glamourable by every job, but that kind of defeats the point doesn't it? We're stuck with either having them job locked and having almost no one wear them because of limitations, or unlocking them and not having any unique job equipment. I'm not sure what I'd prefer.

By the way, if you have some awesome glamour combos in mind that are currently job-restricted, feel free to post them. :) It could help convince the devs that this is something people want.

The best argument that I have heard came from SE, they said that if certain jobs could wear some of the armours, they would confuse players when doing PvP. So I think they should keep the current restriction when doing PvP, but remove them in PvE.

Isn't that a complete non-argument though?
I don't really do a lot of PVP but the few times I did my allies still had job icons and enemies were literally just called "Job".
If PvP really was the issue preventing us from having a less restricted glamour system I'm willing to make sacrifices in PvP. They could just render all enemy players with a generic model for their job instead of their actual model. For all I know it would probably improve performance too.

I'm just gonna jump on the bandwagon for those in favor of all glamour restrictions being removed.
By now, most people are aware that folks are glamoured. It's become a HUGE part of FFXIV. 9/10 you cant really tell exactly what job someone is anyways unless they don't have their weapons hidden.

Many glamours are unambiguous. I had a Roe tank the other day in nothing but a summer lei and some undies. I didnt realize it was a tank until he drew his gigantic longsword and then it was obvious it was a DRK.

My point is glamour restrictions really dont serve much of a purpose nowadays if the argument is "players may not be able to tell what job it is". They already can't most of the time. Nor do they really care that much about it either. This argument is invalid. Just remove the restrictions and call it a day.

Going to say I'm in the minority but I tend to suppore job / gender restrictions on gear.

... What? Being able to glamour an effin pig outfit is not some compromise. That's absurd. I'm not interested in making my character look like a joke. I'm interested in designing outfits that are aesthetically appealing using the full breadth of armor available in the game.

That's not "the best argument" - it's nonsensical. No one would ever confuse a white mage for a warrior, even if that white mage was wearing warrior artifact gear.

I like the jobs to look at least a little unique. And I'm not one who thinks males should be running around in bunny suits or wearing dresses or skinny jeans or mini skirts... or spedos lol.

i prefer job/gender restrictions (as much as I want to wear lord commander outfit... bought it out of out excitement) it would be really weird if my healer is full plated armor. (but i'm ok with tank in their bikini outfit =p ) but honestly speaking... I was very excited when I glamour my brd and mch in full Odin armor.

maybe SE can do it based on armor type? only tank can glamour heavy tank armor but tank can glamour dps/healer armor?
