Is there? How many different ways can you buff yourself, slap a DoT on someone and hit them really hard?

That's ridiculous. There's just as many ways to tank as there are to DPS. Look at Engineers and Stalkers from Wildstar, Bounty Hunters in ToR, the tanks in CoH, DCUO and Rift. There's plenty of ways to tank that don't involve shield bashing. I don't know why people act like any creative or "cool" class should be the sole domain of DPS, like they're the only ones who should be allowed to have fun. Then you wonder why there's no tanks.

Actually, Blue Mage would make a pretty good Magic Tank, but different reasons. I could see it as the sort of tank that eats AOEs or mobs. Bad Breath for a bunch of debuffs to draw aggro, White Wind to heal everyone a bit(though have it focus on drawing aggro more), and Mighty Guard can serve as a handy def/mdef buff or maybe a sort of damage resistance that negates a certain ammount of damage per hit to deal with mobs of weak enemies/attacks?

Or maybe a move that draws in AOE damage to the Blue Mage and make it a harder hitting attack to the tank? Of course, add attacks like goblin punch and detonate as standard attacks/combos as well.

As we know Warrior is HP and Parry. PLD is Block and Parry. I totally seen DRK being Parry and evasive. NIN can force ALL Physical attacks to miss no matter the Boss. Now if dark had a move to force a miss or even reduces the accuracy attack it can be an evasion tank. Magic attacks can been missed. The sprites miss attacks on me all the time on my WAR when I travel the world. So SE can make it work. Blind reduces the accuracy of bosses but it works for like 10% of end game bosses. There is another way with accuracy down. The dodo's at ale port can inflict this on you. It is crossheir marker in red and it says accuracy reduce. Maybe dark knight will have something like that

whatever Rhitahtyn's class was.

though i think a tank class would probably not get the most interesting use of gun-anything.
