I'm no Gridania fan (Limsa all the way!) but the old Shroud is way more to my liking since playing in the new one for over a year now. It was a green Labyrinth-like forest with huge, old trees and really eerie, especially with that "music box" music during thunderstorms. Just like in Thanalan it could happen that you ran into a group of 60+ mobs and just wished they didn't see, hear or smell you!
That's also what I miss about Thanalan. It had those random caves with either tiny bats in it or high leveled monsters. Then again, yes it might've been 'empty' for some people, but what do you expect of a desert? I am actually a bit sad that only Southern Thanalan has some dunes in it and then it's just such a small area.
Mor Dhona was simply dangerous and the pink/purple mist just added onto it and told you: Better stay in the camp. At least it was that way when I started playing in 2011.
Oh and don't get me started on the old Coerthas. Let's say I only wish that the snow will melt anytime soon and we get that great Alpine area back with its nice music and mostly clear view of Ishgard.
