If i turn off the battle effects, will that cause the frame rate to drop? Will I still be able to see the AoE indicator on stuff like Landslide and WotL?

Battle effects settings don't affect how you see NPC activity. They just minimize or eliminate the bells and whistles of player actions based on how you tweak your settings.
I always turn mine off for fights that make heavy use of overhead indicators or are otherwise visually chaotic. It helps clean up the screen so that you can more easily identify mechanics that require your attention.
Thats what Im wanting to do tho. Turn off all the b.s. that i dont need to see. All the animations that possibly slow down everything else. Keep all the sounds that i need to hear but turn off 90% of the visuals. Is it possible to do that? Ive looked but didnt figure it out.
The only way I know of to do this is through the effects settings in the Character configuration menu at the bottom of the list. You'll still see character animations and any small floating text status/healing/damage notifications you have on, but no other graphics (e.g. casting Stoneskin will show you the +Stoneskin message over your target, but no rock wall).
Thats exactly what I wanted to know. I dont mind the scrolling messages or numbers, its the animations that come with them. The stone wall from stoneskin, the massive bursts from spells like Holy and Flare. I cant tell you how many times a pair of Holy spells have glitched or lagged my gameplay. Thank you Cynfael for the info.
No problem :) Disabling the flashy visuals can be very helpful, especially when learning new mechanics. Less to be potentially distracted or even lagged by depending on the user's platform.
