Haven't really looked into it, but from I've heard, DCUO is not much better than XIV.
Still, there's far less options for console MMOs than for PC. Porting to PS3 will likely be the only thing that keeps the game alive.

If by better you mean released with actual content that's fun compared to FFXIV then YES, that's true. But if you mean better as in world, character customization, aesthetics, and story? Then no, it's really quite okay and sub par in some respects. Another example of an MMO that didn't listen to their beta testers is what DCUO is, it could have been so much better given a bit more time in the oven.
I'm sorry but this really isn't true. Let's take CoP for example. I'd like to say that CoP was my favorite expansion in FFXI (and other games) and really enjoyed it. There was difficulty in beating that expansion and the feeling of accomplishment and comrade-ship that went along with it was priceless. Now look at it, level-cap is gone along with any kind of "yay, Raja's ring=mine" feeling too.
But it just doesnt stop at CoP. Much of the other content (expansions, NM's, quests, etc.) has been greatly affected too. Since you can pwn/solo your way through so much of it now and solo NM's that you normally couldn't solo before. Even Whitegate and Besieged is deserted now too (everyone is at port jeuno instead).
There are some good things about Abyssea, but they should have limited the effectiveness of that place. Examples:
*You have to be level 70+ to enter
*The great armor, etc. has a latent effect that goes with it to where it ONLY TAKES AFFECT in Abyssea.
Just things like that.
I haven't really played FFXI much since last year. Mainly because I've been playing FFXIV since launch, but also because FFXI has become a different game. But, there are people out there that do like FFXI better post-Abyssea. And I admit that there are some enjoyable things with Abyssea. So, to each their own I guess.
I don't mind FFXIV being casual as long as it has hardcore aspects to it as well. Meaning that some of the best things/items take time, effort, etc. to acquire.
The four bullet points don't really support your central point, but I must say I agree with you and I'm glad to see your post. This is the truth, disappointing as it may be to some. And it is for the better of the game as a whole.

While this may be my first post on the forums, I may be able to give some insight into what the FFXI player base was hoping for with FFXIV.
First some background. I really enjoyed FFXI, but could not accomplish some of the things I wanted to due to time constraints(CoP for example), and later due to a career change and move I had a hard time doing much outside of leveling BST or random farming. And eventually that, plus my linkshell dissolving during one of my longer breaks from the game led me to stop playing. I have looked at going back to FFXI due to loving the community and game world in general, but with hearing that Abyssea made most of the leveling take place in 1 zone kept me from coming back. I also picked up FFXIV close to when it first came out.
What I was expecting coming into FFXIV, was an underlying basic system at least as polished and functioning as FFXI's, and a rich and diverse world. As to the basic system, on of my biggest gripes was how the basic user interface worked. I never had an issue with the combat system, I could see it could use a few tweaks but the game was still new. The world looked to be rich and diverse at first, but once realized most of what happened involved going to the guild to pick up some random quests was all there was outside of the main story, the game got old really fast.
The biggest things I was looking forward to or hoping for were a similar community to that of FFXI's, that the game would be slightly more friendly to those without large chunks of continuous time to play, and how the character system was going to work. The community FFXI had is a major factor of what kept me playing FFXI even when it was rather rough at times for me to progress, and compare that to WoW's community which is what primarily drove me away from it. The time thing is rather obvious, as everyone that played FFXI knows that unless you played certain classes it was common to have at least an hour wait before getting a group made or an invite to a group, let alone travel time to where ever it was. Though at least once you got rolling it, it was a different story. And for me, it always seemed that I'd get my groups shortly after I make it out to the middle of nowhere to farm. The character system because it looked to allow a descent amount of customization.
I was not expecting the game to be a clone of FFXI, nor was I expecting it to feel so unpolished at release, especially when they did not have to re-invent the wheel on simple things like the user interface. The game really felt like it was still somewhere between an Alpha and a Beta phase.
I am going to be giving FFXIV another try to see how its changed, hopefully for the better. Was looking to see if was still in the free state, and it seems it is. I really hope the future of the game ends up being a good one, and closer to the style of FFXI than that of WoW. As I would rather have a slightly harder game, than one that hands out most stuff on a silver platter. As I really miss the feeling of accomplishment that came along with certain aspects through out FFXI and haven't found that feeling much in any other MMO yet.
