Maybe to combat the homogenization of gear, they could throw in a few "rare" pieces. These could be items gained through a long questline that could be difficult to finish. Right now there is nothing in this game that is really so hard to complete quest wise. I mean, look at the current relic questline. Sure, you see many people complaining about Titan hard still, but, 90%+ of everyone has a relic already. Aren't relics in their very nature considered a weapon without equal? I sure see plenty of their equal floating about in everyone's hands... :P
But yea, I mean, how other games had handled this was by means of just random luck, which is one way to handle it. In WoW, for instance, back when Black Temple was relevant, remember people that had those Warglaives? Aeon, had items of relic quality have a chance to drop off just random creatures in the world (which is kind of strange to me, but :p ). Whatever event in which they come into ffxiv wouldn't really matter, other than that everyone would get to try for one. It shouldn't be something simple to get, otherwise they wouldn't be rare! But it shouldn't also be something only the top players can get either. Something in the middle would be best. Even Joe Somebody could win a Warglaive, but maybe the person that shows up to every raid and is most helpful to their guild would be given the most priority. Helping out your fc should be rewarded. :)
