In terms of the music for 2.0, the sound team re-did most of it due to simple things such as using appropriate instruments for the area.
Nobou Uematsu didn't have anything but artwork to go by in 1.23 and in parts the music didn't fit as well as it could have.
Each area you enter the music has been designed to fit, a luxury Nobou Uematsu didn't have.
There are some FATEs with different battle music.
The fight with Cancer on Bloodshore has a great theme: http://youtu.be/tOs_sz_ecHs
(Might need to turn it up a bit)
I'm somethere along these lines as well.
I was put off by the overuse of electric guitar that 1.0 had, which I felt didn't fit places like La Noscea or the Black Shroud. Uematsu's tracks managed to shine whenever the score moved away from synth and electric guitars (the old Coerthas battle theme is still one of my favorite tracks from 1.0). Admitedly, he had some concept art shots but next to no actual info on the sutff he was asked to make (hence why Ul'dah sounded like a tropical paradise rather than a city in the middle of the desert).
Mizuta Naoshi's tracks do tend to lean towards a certain "lightness", though I attribute that to the fact that they are composed mimicking the old style of music from long ago, where tracks had to be short and memorable because you were going to loop them ad infinitum on an 8/16-bit cartridge.
