Open World PvP

It would be much easier to sell a PvP dedicated server to the development team if the current PvP area's were thriving and busy, instead they are deserted and tumbleweeds are rolling about. Asking for a new server requires infrastructure expenditure, and converting an old one requires kicking off all the players who don't want PvP, forcing them out of housing, FC, away from friends all of that stuff. People are arguing like all Yoshi P has to do is click his fingers and a PvP server appears out of thin air. It doesn't work that way.

You say as they have supported Feast for years with special rewards, a new PvP map in ShB and plans for a new mode in EW. But please give us this deep, insider lore you have your hands on.

Yeah they have, and it's still about as popular an an STD. I hope they keep doing so, to keep the people happy who do play it, but asking for dedicated servers is not a trivial request. Stay salty though bro, it suits you.

Yeah, they've tried incentivizing the heck out of PvP, but it just never catches on. And it sounds like they might shut down the feast to make room for the new mode.

Lets take your idea:

New player rolls on pvp server. New player is ganked mercilessly.

New player moves to a non pvp server and tells anyone he can find to stay AWAY from those servers at all costs...to say nothing of the adverse publicity for FF 14 that will be generated when news of this gets out to the gaming world.

If you think for one moment the FF 14 devs hadnt taken all this into account, arent aware of the pitfalls and damage it could do to the entire franchise ( none of the other FF games are open world pvp and this one wont be either, neither will be FF 15, I can gaurantee it ), they do, trust me on this.

They do.

Let's examine the rest, given the question - Why would a player select a PvP server?

Usually, because a player likes PvP, but let's say that the player is new to PvP- I was like that years ago. So let's say that the new player gets ganked repeatedly - which also happened to me.

Outcome 1

Move to a different area (one of my choices)

Outcome 2

get friends - kill the person doing the ganking - slowly learn to PvP (also one of my choices), start to have fun

Outcome 3

Keep going back to the same place - die over and over and over again (OK, I would try once or twice) - then select another option


Outcome 4

Throw up my hands, quit the game, NOT my choice, however, perfectly valid for some people. Did some of these people tell others to stay away? Probably.


I don't see gloom and doom in all of these outcomes. I don't see loathing for OW PvP for everyone. I do absolutely agree that not everyone enjoys OW PvP, just as (gasp) not everyone enjoys Savage or harder raids - and that's fine too. but let's be careful when start extending sociopathic, elitist, toxic or other behaviour onto our community.

It's just not fun in it's current state. Pretty much needs a complete overhaul.

It's a side content with no gear progression, and even the new mode coming in Endwalker is meant to attract more casual PvPers.

It also doesn't have a PvP server, and as a casual side content, it doesn't need it. A fully voluntary opt-in mode is just about the most in needs if it wants to provide OP-PvP, but even then, it might still cause problems with the current state of the server capacity and the way instancing works for the zones.

No but he does mention going after people who's party finder he doesn't like. During the course of this thread its quite obvious what some peoples motivations are, they have been quite open about it.
