Oh my god all those people that take this suggestion as a personal attack do need some kind of help.
On the flip side, why do I even expect common sense from the playerbase anymore?
I can't believe this thread is still going...I needed a good laugh, thanks.
I mean.. it really should NOT matter what you wear. Dress your character in whatever you enjoy. The whole point of this option is so that you can do what you like and other people can have an option to not see it if they don't want it. Nobody has any right to tell you how to enjoy this game as long as what you like isn't impinging on anyone elses enjoyment.
Wear dem slippers and thongs all you like, just understand that there are some people out there who don't want to see it and if they had a choice would "filter" you. Tolerance should go both ways.
I think to appease both sides we should have an option to just toggle the whole darn player off and you can run the dungeon being mysteriously healed or shielded by an unseen force. If you can’t accept me at my bikini tank, you don’t deserve me at my full raid gear.
I’m not being entirely facetious, either. If they are going to entertain glamour censorship I would prefer to just not be looked at at all by people who really can’t stomach some silly slippers for a 20 minute dungeon run in this high fantasy, serious game.
I mean, it's not really much of a surprise that this thread has gotten to this point.
"Why stop at glamours? Let's just toggle other players on and off!"
Saw that coming since page 1. And it is probably the worst suggestion this thread has to offer which is saying a lot.
I wouldn't be against such an option. I live in a gated community where everybody knows each other and visitors aren't permitted entry without a visitor's pass. It'd be pretty easy for me to adjust to such a system being implemented in-game. Whether it's someone opting to hide my character on their screen or the other way around, I wouldn't have an issue with it.
In my experience the players who are most eager to be seen tend to be the sort to embrace unpleasant aesthetics, be it through how they opt to decorate their houses or by the way in which they opt to glamour their character.
Why is asking to have an option to do/see/think/say/read/write/hear become offensive to others?
The person never asked to the dev team to FORCE you to have the sets up that the other people have be yours as well. I am fine with havibg many options for the many different AND similar taste of many different peope.
I guess people think that if someone wants to have a unique look or just a standarize look is being entitled. Just reevaluate your criteria. Some people like to think they are in a different world (so many isekai genre in the comics books and even saw movies with that genre), whilenothers just only care about their aesthetic in the city and well running in a dungeon to get exp and level is irrelevant. Any idea is fine. It is just something that is not harming you. If you think that is wrong then overall we all player are harming society by playing video games that is just for kids =P.
Maybe I'll take it a step further then since we're finally reaching some extreme heights.
How about we just give players the option to kick other players from their server? You know, since some people want to play their MMOs in peace. Don't want those dang players showing up in my MMORPG!
Sounds a bit ridiculous, but you know what? I'd bet a fair amount of gil that you would support it.
I’m glad I could finally provide.
But it was less an enthusiastic “hell yeah, let’s just toggle players off!!!” and more “if you don’t want to look at me then don’t look at all.” My real, unhelpful, and unsympathetic opinion? This is an MMO and if you want a totally immersive experience that caters to you, then go play a single player game.
If you want a game where you can just treat other players like customizable NPCs, Animal Crossing comes out on Friday. I suggest some people in this thread check it out.
People play MMORPG's for different reasons. Me personally, I just like doing dungeons and raids/tials. Also like story and open world content but that's secondary for me since I'd rather do that in a single player RPG. The MMO aspect isn't what sells it for me, it's instanced combat.
As far as I know, there's no other game that offers "WoW like" instances that isn't an MMO. If there were and it is polished, I'd play that. Closest thing might be Monster Hunter World, which doesn't have tab targeting and doesn't represent holy trinity (tank/healer/dps) well. I heard classic RPGs is what MMO instanced content is based upon, but those are obviously outdated and likely won't offer online multiplayer.
When I do play story and open world content, I couldn't give 2 damns about seeing other players. I do it solo and treat it as a single player RPG so I can immerse myself in it and enjoy it that way. For that reason I'd rather have players hidden on my client sometimes, specifically when I'm doing instances for the first time for example (so it feels like I'm solo killing everyone as Warrior of Light) and in overcrowded areas like in Eulmore. Personally I find that the MMO aspect makes the story awkward sometimes.
I'd tap into my trust fund if it meant I could pay to transfer some players to different servers. :p
...I'm kidding, of course.
More seriously, though, it'd be much easier logistically to just make other characters vanish on a client side screen than it would be to transfer everything about their character to another server/data centre. Ultimately, though, the proposal made in the original thread is a pretty fair compromise and it what most in support of the thread are pushing for.
For funsies I clicked on the Dispel Glamour button to see what my jobs looked like without glamour. Yech.... mismatched items; I wouldn't want people to see her like that. Makes me wonder how I survived EQ1 with all the "patchwork knights" that were running around.
WoW was like that up until the end of Cataclysm when their transmog system was first introduced. I started in the middle of the expansion before that, but even then it was pretty obvious that there were some mismatched items being worn. lol I strived to have a set that looked well even if my stats took a small hit. Unfortunately it was like the glamour system we have in FF XIV currently. No logs, no collections. Just...items that need to be stored. My banks were full before the next expansion (MoP) was even halfway through. WoD did me no favors. Legion finally gave us a collections tab where appearances were stored and I nearly cried with joy. I hope we get something similar someday here. Though to be honest, I would just be happy if they opened the glamour dresser to a greater number of appearances to account for any and all items in the game that actually have an appearance. That would probably be the simplest solution I guess.
Imagine being such a stick in the mud that you let other people's outfits ruin your experience.
Yikes.
Glamour is a form of self-expression in this virtual world. I don't want people to see me in some generic getup, I want people to see the outfit I put together that I'm using to express myself. Big no to this.
All I want is the option for catboys to disappear on my screen.
Fully support this option. My screen my choice.
I got hit with a suspension for a using the r word in a post, did not expect to see this thread still on the first page. Either way I am always in support for more options that allow for player choice that would improve ones personal enjoyment of the game. Generally I believe if players have more control the community benefits greatly from it since players would have the option to limit cosmetic elements or non vital game play elements that have objectively minimal impact subjectively is another story though.
So you like dungeons and raids, but you want to hide everyone from your view? Do you not realize that this will require the removal of half the mechanics in the fights? You just want all the fights to be easy and basic? Go play a single player game if that's how you want to play. It'd be much more your speed.
Based on how he worded it, I would think he's saying he would like to turn it on and off on demand with the click of a button or something.
Honestly, hiding other players entirely when outside of any parties or instances actually has less room to be controversial than the suggestion of hiding glamour. People would not be able to cry "WAH! MA IDENTITY!", and it may even improve performance in places like Eulmore and Limsa.
I mean, the point of an MMO is socializing when we want to and not-socializing when we don't want to. Otherwise, I wouldn't have a custom "nothing" chat tab where I can't see any text whatsoever.
Hiding glamours? Eh, by itself I don't really care. I just think that some in this thread have questionable agendas. But I think hiding other players is taking it way too far and it goes against the very nature of an MMO. MMO stands for "Massively Multiplayer Online". That means that people are signing up to play a game that involves other people at some point or another. If they can't handle that then perhaps the genre isn't for them. I'm not shaming them for that, but I think it's a fair observation. Some people also don't like to socialize but will tolerate others to get things done. Some days I'm that guy, to be fair, but I'm fully aware of the type of game I signed up for. But anyway, if they are looking for a fully customizable experience there's plenty of single player games that allow for modding. Skyrim is my preference there. lol One can shape the game in literally every imaginable way and it is amazing.
You're taking what I said out of context (I might have worded it in confusing way though). I'd like to immerse and participate in story as well as open world by treating it as a single player rpg. Having a toggle option to hide players and as I mentioned in post before that, replace them with flames or symbols representing their job or something (so mechanics are still possible) would allow me to te us the toggle whenever I want to either increase performance (eulmore) or immerse myself in story by treating it as a single player RPG.
If this game didn't have any story at all, and it was basically 1 HUB or menu for gear progression and the all other content was just instanced dungeons and raids with other players, I'd have liked this game even more and I would never want or use this "hide player" option.
I still enjoy the open world and story this game provides a lot, but the fact that it's an MMORPG does not enhance the experience but rather makes it awkward sometimes and decreases its value and immersion imo. For this I would like to use the toggle perhaps first time I do an instance or in open world so it feels like I'm the solo Warrior of Light for the sake of immersion.
At least that's what I meant with that post. Probably a very minority opinion so I don't expect such option would be implemented for this reason, just giving what my reasoning was at the time.
As I've said before here or in another thread (don't remember), there's no solid game right now that provides online "WoW like" (holy trinity, tab targeting, ...) dungeons and raids without being an MMORPG. People who are only interested in that type of content are forced to engage in the "massively multiplayer" aspect as well (to some extend).
If I want to enjoy story and open world, I would indeed prefer Skyrim. Skyrim doesn't have online dungeons and raids though.
Agreed. And this is also where people are getting confused, thinking that MMORPG, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, means something other than being massively multiplayer, online, and an RPG.
Massively = lots of players.
Multiplayer = multiple players in the same game world.
Online = duh
Role Playing Game = also duh
^ Given that definition, I am under absolutely no obligation to interact with, acknowledge the existence of, look at, see, or be around the other thousands of people playing.
Square Enix is also under no obligation to implement such a feature, but to say that it would be "taking it too far" if they did add it is complete nonsense.
Interestingly enough I mainly play games like ffxiv and wow for the gameplay such as raids, crafting, pvp etc . . . The social aspect is something I personally can do without. As players who more then likely enjoy the same game I do not think it is wrong to look past oneself for a moment and understand that maybe not everyone has the same preferences be them based around bigotry or not we have no means to know what the true intent behind ones actions are when it comes to online interactions and I do think we should take things with a grain of salt because I do feel that often times how one acts or says online may not always be a proper reflection of their views or values and simply a product of that one moment in time.
In short it is just an option no need to take it so personally.
Modern MMO's just aren't very social. You team up with other players from time to time to progress the MSQ's or earn tomes but you can do as much without ever talking to other players since the group finder systems are completely automated.
There's a handful of people I socialise with in-game. Everybody else is just a face in the crowd. I don't care for the 'LOOK AT ME' style 'socialising' that has become common in recent years. It just isn't nearly as satisfying for me as the tight knit, server driven socialising that existed back in the early years of WoW.
Nobody needs to leave the game just because they don't want to fawn over strangers.
I was more or less referring to players who simply can't tolerate group play at all, even if it means they can't progress their game. I get the not wanting to socialize bit because I've been that guy before, but I do feel that players playing an MMORPG like this one need to be open to the possibility that they may need other people to get some things done, and if not then their time may be better spent elsewhere. Obviously I can't tell people how to spend their time and money, but I can have my opinion on it at least. But yeah, I spend more time paying attention to what I'm doing and not what others are unless I'm in group content where you kinda have to pay attention to that. I suppose that helps, and I understand that is harder to do for some than it is for others. My overall opinion on this topic hasn't changed, but I get where some people are coming from.
This is advanced thread necromancy.
But the idea has been around for as long as the glamour system has been in place. Replace the "homophobia" argument with "tanks in bikinis", its been something that has been argued for a long long time.
Would you rather have a new thread about it? Its not a redundant subject.
I'm still all for this wonderful suggestion.
