Nobody 'desperately' needs it. It's just a neat thing to add to the game now that the original players who had the items in question gathering dust have had five years of exclusivity. Those who feel as if it is a bitter betrayal are free to leave the game - though they don't appear to be willing to put their money where their mouths are.
Making it out as if the developers are the bad guys is dishonest, too. Everybody agreed to the Terms of Service that specifically state that the game can and will change on a whim.
