V -> VII -> VI for me
FFV is an extremely underrated game. Shame it didn't enter the world (US) market until much later. I have so many fond memories of the game. The music is just amazing and epic! It really draws you into the game. It really brings you into a state of sadness, mystery, joy, triumph, defeat, etc. Coupled with the humor, it was just perfect. The Job System was also brilliant! To this day, I still enjoy playing the game. Still waiting for a ff5 remake like all the other previous titles had. I highly doubt it though :(

An amazing take on the music of FFV
Favorite? XI hands down
That sense of awe and danger when exploring areas, the joy of getting a new piece of gear that didnt looked all brown, learning your job in a party at the dunes, reaching Jeuno for the first time, sneaking on dungeons to get that little piece of cutscene in the next mission, the rounfare music.
Too bad that no one can experience that anymore, it was a one time chance experience and that's what makes it special to those that did experienced it.
Im liking XIV and sure fits more with my current lifestyle and reduced playtime windows, but Im not attached and inmersed as I was in XI.
Anyway another honorable mention is FFV as stated by Yokan, is a very underated game, everyone goes for VI, or VII and I can see the reasons why, VI is a GREAAT epic with great characters, music, iconic scenes, innovation, well is up there on top with CT on the greates RPGs of all time, and technically speaking, the ones that pushed SNES to its limits. And VII was most people's first, so it has nostalgia points, also was a huge leap in visual achivement (rewarding FMVs and Tifa's ejem... assets) but also on its own merit, the char design was ace, say what you will about emo cloud, metrosexual sephiroth, stereotipical Barret, waifu bait Aerith or eye candy Tifa, one thing is certain, you remember every one of those characters, what they look like, how the interact etc. Few cast of characters can brag on that level of pop culture precense.
Back to V, it has great characters, a simple rewarding storyline, memorable scenes, colorful visuals (VI is a bit dark and brown to my tastes) and has a lot more of the FF lore, feels more like an adventure and not much as an epic drama (nothing wrong with those but I thing the core FF experience shoud be the adventure)
In that train of tough, IX is kind of like that, focused more on the lore and elements of a FF, and let the characters live there (but I dont rank it in my favorits cuz I cant stand the main hero, girl and villain)
I could keep going mentioning thigs of every FF I ever played but I dont want to walltext'd this thread
I would have to say none other than VII , it was my first true full experience of FF. I was mesmerized by everything, the story captured me, and as someone else mentioned it even made me cry!! I loved everything about it, all the way down to the side quests, golden saucer , choco breeding ( omg loved choco breeding and racing lol, the day I earned my golden choco and ran across the ocean was EPIC) Fighting and defeating all the bahamuts. Maxing out wonderful materias and making great combinations with them.
I could go on and on and on, that game was my entry into fantasy world gaming and will never be forgotten by me. Before that I used to play stuff like mario , and arcade fighters.. all I do is eat sleep and dream RPG nowadays. EVERYTHING about that game is just utterly amazing, I know its been said so many times some people get sick of hearing it lol..the characters, the stor, the music, the tears, the laughter, the joy the sadness. It made me really feel as if I was "living the fantasy". And I have been ever since.
My character's look is modeled after a cross between Setzer Gabbiani and Kefka.
Final Fantasy XV mehehe
Not an FF, but still made by Square.
Drumroll
Xenogears.
Because I'll see your Espers/Summons/Doll like black mages and raise you one giant robot designed to slay God itself. Hands down the most engaging and story driven game Square has ever made, a true masterpiece. As far as FF's go, IV (Or II for SNES) was also an epic title. Kain is and always will be my favorite FF character. Tactics was also a masterpiece, because Delita was such a unique character, I only wish he was playable!
1. FFX: The art, music, characters, story. The combination of it all gives such a special and indescribable atmosphere and feelings that only people that played it could understand. Words can't do it justice.
2. FFX-2: Returning to this world was exciting and nostalgic. Many criticized it for its less serious approach but I respect their choice to change a lot of things from FFX. It had to be refreshing enough to warrant a sequel, and it was. Trema is also my favorite and most challenging superboss of the serie (without catnip) and the job system was fun.
3. FFVII: The biggest quality of this game in my opinion is having tons of beautiful, detailed (for the time) unique and memorable key locations in static CG. I close my eyes and still remember very clearly the slums, wall market, costa del sol, mako reactors, gold saucer, and all their wonderful moments like when cloud and tifa have that conversation on the top of the water tank in Nibelheim, and that was 16 years ago. I think it's what helps make this game such a classic.
Xenogears????
I'm afraid I must serve you with this. :D

Final fantasy 4, hands down my favorite story. Rydia and Edge, best final fantasy couple ever.
FF Tactics.
VII>VI>VIII>IV>X for top 5 with VII being game of the century :p
Main series classic: Final Fantasy IV
Main series modern: Final Fantasy XII
Of course I like Final Fantasy IX a lot too, but it's a modern game made up to be like a classic game, so I don't know which category to put it in.
Side game: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
Even if Tactics is not considered to be part of the main series, it is my fave. Love the more political type of story, loved the characters, especially Ramza <3. Totally relatable to me.
Also loved the job system, and the S-RPG type of gameplay. Can't be bothered with the Tactics Advance series, I want a real tactics sequel!
I even downloaded IX on ps3 other day, just have to play it again, best FF for me so far :)
My favorite game bearing the Final Fantasy title would be Final Fantasy The Four Heroes of Light. To be honest I'm not sure why I like the game so much, its just charming and feels warm to me.
My favorite Final Fantasy from the main series is definitely Final Fantasy III, the DS version more specifically.
Tactics is also high up there as I loved the story, setting, and gameplay it offered.
Edit: Oh I completely forgot about the Crystal Chronicle games! I love those ones too! Echoes of Time was neat.
FF6 for all the reasons stated before.
I really they remake the game in a modern 3d format filled with the original awesomeness.
I'd definitely buy it (and the console/system that goes with it for max performance).
FF6 is the game that truly got me into gaming and started my love of Final Fantasy titles.
To this day, it remains the game that pops into my mind whenever someone says "video game".
This thread needs more love for Mystic Quest.
How fun :D Mine is my first ever Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy X. That game was/is just perfect, the music, characters, battle system, bosses, story, everything!
Final Fantasy IV was my first FF as well as my first RPG in general so it will always be my favorite purely for sentimental reasons.
But my favorite as far as gameplay, story, characters and overall enjoyment of the game it is hands down Final Fantasy VI
My favorite would have to be VIII. The world, story, characters, combat, GF's was all so great!
Runner Ups:
FFXII
FFVII
FFIX
and of course..
FFXI! - seriously some of the best memories and most nostalgic moments I've ever had in a game/mmo. A serious love-hate affair.
My fav was IX, followed up by VII, VIII, XI (agree with the love hate affair after 8years), and XII I love how much there was to do in XII
My first was... err, darn, it's been so long I think the first one I played on my own was VIII!
IX and VI are probably my favorites though. I was super pro at remembering where all the moogles were in IX, also Bobby Corwin and Vivi and awwwh, VIII had the best card game though. VI I'm so pleased with the story, it's my goto for recommending to friends. :)
