No to free jumping.
Yes to situation specific jumping.
Is clear to me having jump feature will make me want to do a bunny hop while i'm travelling anywhere so i'll much welcome the feature of auto-jump on certain area ^_^
I think SE is planning to do a jump feature similar to the one in FFXIII where there is a designated area near a ledge that your trying to get across that will allow you to jump.. I am almost sure that this would be a much more welcome addition rather than a jump action that can be done with your character at anytime. This solves the problem without making the game kiddy and unreal
Not if it is in designated areas similar to FFXIII
Is there any FF game that can jump?
I think an autojump for things like getting over terrain would be great. It irks me when modern 3D games don't have an autojump, just because my suspension of belief for that kind of thing has worn paper-thin. (Can't get past this area because of a one-foot rock? Okay...)
FFXIII was terrible and I hope to god no one plans on bringing any of the game mechanics over to FFXIV. I think that adding a 'jump' button to this game would insult the Final Fantasy purists (the only people still playing this game) and to see people jumping around as their only means of transport would be plain obnoxious. I can understand that the dev team is trying to tap into what made other MMOs popular, but FFXIV has no personality as it stands, jumping players would just add to that.
I'll take a chocobo over a 'jump' any day of the week!
They way the Dev/op describes how the jump feature is used i like it. I have no problem with it. For the rest of the FF boys who don't like just blink when your Char jumps so you don't need to see it.
jk read way above.
Yes to jump, PERIOD
Won't hurt the people who don't want it at all, if you don't want to jump don't press the button. But I want to jump as do many others.
It isn't about people not wanting to jump themselves, it is about not wanting everyone bunny hopping about.
The majority of people in this thread, seem to be happy with the approach the OP suggested. I don't think it'd be fair on either side to go to one extreme or the other, and think a contextual based jump system would be a wonderful comprimise.
It allows those who want to jump over small obstacles the choice to do so, and it prevents bunny hopping everywhere.
This is 2011.
END ALL BE ALL REASON WHY WE NEED SOME FORM OF JUMP: A 1 foot high cliff that instead of just walking over to go forward, we have to take a 15 minute detour to get around.
wut?
I don't really feel the jump so important. Someone wrote "jump is for new MMO". I find Jump already old.
If you can add some real use of jump:
(example)
When jumping I can damage more with a certain skill, or attack some particular part of a monster.
But if the only things jump adds is some form of suicide, or to climb over a fence, I can live without.
Yes, it can add a dimension in some quest or some fight, but this is possible with some tool (use an item) or a contextual jump, as already said.
To put in some perspective, in WOW jumping is used for:
Getting through some dungeons (BFD)
Avoiding monster attacks (Quake, etc.)
During PVP (clever use, your character keeps going forward during a jump, but you can turn around mid-jump and attack anyone behind you)
Some quests/puzzles
Several boss encounters
Poopooing jumping because some people hop around when bored seems stupid compared to the extra layer of complexity it can add to combat or other game areas.
Fix landscape issues and you dont need jump.
no thank you to jump
Ok so didn't read this thread because of how long it is so sorry if this was already mentioned. But how about to use jump it consumes your whole stamina bar, and you also need to have a full stamina bar to use it. Or put a cool down timer on it. This would allow for free jump without the annoying bunny hoppers.
I would LOVE jump, it would make it easier to get down cliffs that is 1 feet down instead of walking for 25 min to get down. And gives you something to do when you're bored, how many jumps can you do in an hour!!!
Am not for jump but i can't say no just because i dislike it others players would like to jump.
Menu jump would be the best
Menu--> Jump --> You see yourself jumping---> time limit-->wait---> jump.
This could also work with ledge your menu display jump you jump over the ledge.
I'm all for the FFXIII style of auto-jumping at small ledges or whatnot. Having to run for 15 min. to get to an area 1 feet below me is just silly.
I remember when I first found out that jumping would not be in XIV. I was upset, and convinced it was a deal breaker for me. After all, once you spend 6 years bunny hopping around in wow, you kinda get used to it.
Then I played the game. At first, I still had the nice rose colored glasses that most of us have when playing a new MMO for the first time. And at the time I could care less about jumping.
After the newness wore off lag, instability, lack of content and zone originality got to me.. (ie why are marmots outside every city instead of mobs more appropriate for the geography? Do dodos really belong in a desert?). Even though I had convinced myself I was done with quest grinders, I found myself longing for an NPC with some indication that they had something for me to do. And at the time I could care less about jumping.
Now here we are, almost 6 months after release, I'm happier with the stability, lag is better, Sidequest system implemented.. And I could still care less about jumping.
I couldn't jump in XI and never needed to. I see no need to in XIV. I think there are far more important things that this game needs implemented to justify spending any resources on a jump ability.
Wow, people are really going nuts over such a small innocent improvement such as jumping.
+1 for me, I am all for adding a jump!
What is the big deal anyway? You don't want to see people jump around? seriously, you need to get over it! You know what's not realistic and really breaks immersion? The fact that everyone in the game is always running everywhere. How about you start to walk everywhere. I mean you wouldn't run everywhere in real life would you? Run to the shop... Run back to the gate, run to the camp, run to the mobs, run to gather run here run there run run.....
A Jump feature like FF13 is not going to happen people - sorry. I certainly hope the DEV team does not have soooo much free time on their hands to walk about the whole land of Eorzea to test and see where it is appropriate to implement an option to pop up for you to have the choice to go over a cliff. Instead of you taking that extra 15 seconds to go around it. They would have to work at this for a long time! I hope they have better things to do.
It's easier, more practical and modern to just let the characters be able to jump. It will most likely happen and then it wont be a big deal. I doubt anyone will quit the game over it and if there is some that do, it will be a very small loss in this case.
@ PLAT
watch any WoW movie involing onyxia..... kil'jaeden....
ya......... soon ppl will be complaining about ppl failing to jump.
"watch the tail!" "more dots more dots... ok stop dots"
Couldn't resist sorry XD
I wouldn't mind a jump or even a double jump Like in perfect would international. I actually don't see many hopers there. Or in wow for that fact. One of my fav things to do in games with jumping, is free running. Or the ability to run any where like across rooftops. This also add to the role play. Like being a thief and running on roof tops to get away.
Not one FF title has ever had a jump feature, unless you count Dragoon's "Jump" ability.
Why ruin that trend now?
It is unneeded and unnecessary.
If no one wants jump then why not at least eliminate the invisible walls so we can at least drop down, what's the purpose of invisible wall unless the drop is ungodly.
Not being able to get over knee-high obstacles is incredibly annoying. This was never a problem in 2D RPGs, and it also doesn't cause much of a problem in the pseudo-3D environments of the PS1 titles, but presents a huge limitation in true 3D RPGs. The inability to jump has been a major problem with several FF games ever since FFX, which was the first truly 3D entry in the FF series.
There have been multiple FF games that included the ability to jump:
FFX-2
FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus
FFXIII
Kingdom Hearts
Okay, that last one was a joke, lol, but still, there have been FF games that included the ability to jump. (And KH feels more like an FF game than many actual FF games, lol!)
Oh god no. Having to open up a menu just to use a basic aspect of character movement is a very bad idea. Just imagine if walking worked the same way....
The FF "purists" deserve to be insulted, as their outdated philosophies are keeping the entire series stuck in the stone age. Seriously, back in the days of the PS1 and the SNES, the FF games were a HUGE name-brand. Now, they're just kind of average. The series needs to evolve and move forward, not cling to old traditions that are no longer effective in this day and age.
fight giant angry scorpion by yourself? fine
edit: Jump 7 feet into the air and slam the ground on the way down. Fine.
Hop over a knee high fence? denied
"Why ruin that trend?" Did you seriously just ask this? It never ceases to amaze me how rooted in tradition some of you are, only for the sake of upholding those traditions. Just because something's a trend doesn't mean it can't be altered for the better. SE really needs to put a stop to their antiquated ideals before it's too late.
I'm fine with jumping if there's a reason to implement it. Right now there's not. There are too many other things that need doing right now that actually are necessitated by gameplay. Jumping should remain far down the list until either the rest of the important stuff is done, or until they actually implement a reason to necessitate it.
Zelda doesn't have jumping :P
Amazing that the most popular thread is about the least important feature.
