Please stop using Discord during raids

There's some truth to what they said but it's not entirely accurate. It used to be called discordapp and that was also the URL. On the original homepage for Discord back in 2015 they had FFXIV logos splashed around.

Discord was developed by an FFXIV player who also made Guildwork, which is an app very similar to XivApp. I assume that's where the confusion is from. Discord was created as a disposable voicechat, borne from frustration with trying to communicate in raids on 14.

I remember first joining discord because they were directly partnering with xivdb back in the day iirc. I thought it was a neat, free alternative to TeamSpeak but it was a hassle moving friends off of Skype at first.

Ah, memories.

People are being disingenuous and you know, you do you. There's a clear difference between Discord, Calculators, Shaders, cosmetic changes, general quality of life stuff vs having a bot call out mechanics before they exist (and list them in order for you too as a ui element), using a program to ignore animation locks + being able to triple or quad weave w/ no detriment, etc etc.

I don't think anyone cares half a sh-- about people using simple UI mods, like showing peoples job icons, floating chat boxes, etc. or about people changing how things appear on their client.

It does suck that it's become everything or nothing though, I will say.

(I do not advocate using any mods, regardless.)

There are people who've been banned who only had simple ui mods.

Do I wish Discord was banned? I wish Discord didn't exist. There is nothing I hate more than to be happily playing a game and my friend who is half the world away say to me "Can we go to Discord" because he hates shifting screens and typing. I really cannot stand having someone talking in my ear while I am playing a game, any game, to the point I will shut down the game before booting up Discord. He is my friend. He won't bend so I have to. It is part of being a friend. That does not mean I like it.

This is a really good thread. However I think it's lacking something.

I think SE should also ban the use of people having WhatsApp, as you all know WhatsApp is infamous for people sharing YouTube videos, and what's worse, you can call people! This can only go to facilitate people meeting up in real life to discuss Raid mechanics, giving them an edge over people who don't want to unlock their front doors and face the real world to discuss mechanics, or, Hydaelyn forbid, how to push up their DPS numbers to perform better during boss fights.

Before discord, people would just go to steam, facebook, teamspeak, msn, etc. Some platforms are simply popular for chatting, and therefor people prefer going there. Discord on that has a reputation that is game related, and splits each game in that quite well. So even on that im not surprised either.

My biggest issue with discord is that it hogs resources and is highly unreliable for gaming in which you are forced to communicate with your team quickly. Its voice chat has massive delays, audio quality issues (too often i hear people going robot), and common enough even has downtime issues in which voice doesnt work at all (and this is typicaly during times in which people game). At some point my group already decided to go back to teamspeak, which on that did have a few times that it went down, but unlike discord this was only for like 15 minutes instead of 2 hours (and in 2 years only twice where discord was monthly). And yes, you can pay, but if the f2p chat has such severe issues with stability, im not going to risk paying for that.

Discord is good for normal chat however because of its interface. But outside of that, its not good. Even though i still prefer steam on that, but thats because most of my chat is not group based. Steam's group chat is still significantly worse than discord.

For casual PvE gaming however, even if voice chat is included, it does a decent enough job as in that case delays dont matter much. For PvP or difficult Coop however, i would suggest not using discord.

Hating discord because people abuse that, thats not a valid excuse. Hate the people for that. Otherwise you could just hate steam because people are also sending the same trash through steam. Discord started out as a good platform, but feature bloat simply made the things that originaly made it good, function a lot less effective. And even with those issues, its still the best platform around. Simply because its not tied to any game developer itself. The closest to this usefullness would be reddit, except reddit lacks private groups in it, and has a horrible moderation system (echo chamber effect). But reddit on that is better in public availability.

But in the end, use the tools for what they are ment, and on that, for general chat in gaming (especialy acros the globe), discord does its job well.

I recently reported my entire FC for using this program which goes against TOS (Discord). I am part of the crusade against third-party programs. I'm typing this without my keyboard, so console gamers don't feel at a disadvantage.

Yep. PSN chat is the only supported chat system for FFXIV. But eventually once discord integration with PSN is complete. So will Discord.
