That's nice, but unless you are willing to pay for upgrading everything so they can unlock servers and keep them that way.... then what you want or don't want is completely irrelevant to the situation.

What attitude is that? That I'm just telling it as it is? That I'm not sugarcoating anything? If I recall correctly when this thread first started, I did address what you said and directly spoke on what you were saying. Remember when you referenced other MMOs and I brought up how WoW locks servers themselves due to overcrowding? But sure...let's just go with every single comment I've posted in this thread had an attitude. That works for me. Now commenting on the rest of this post, sure, everybody would love to have better servers. Truth be told, a good number of us want a better engine, not the struggling holdover from 1.0 that we have right now. But to say that Balmung has never crashed Aether (and it seems you've been saying this for a few pages) in spite of more experienced players who have been here since Besaid and Fabul were separate servers and have experienced said crashes is thoughtless at best.
This is the kind of attitude in people, especially recently, that's very irritating. TheAngelneer never "attacked" you. She was far less rude than I was and she answered your question. It's hard to see this thread as anything other than a troll thread because you still say "people did not answer the question" when the question has been answered for 17 pages.
Your attitude is incredibly off putting and no one cares how much you want to play with your friends. You and your friends should not dictate how the game runs. This selfish notion of "it's inconvenient to me so it has to change" is so ridiculous. You should deal with it, not expect it to change because you want it to.
Balmung is locked because it is OVERPOPULATED. Does that make sense?
Ah, and how did I ever forget to comment on this part. Your thread is literally filled with posts suggesting what to do. From what I've seen here, it looks like it isn't that you and your friends aren't unable to play with each other - it's that you and your friends are unwilling to do something as simple as either a server transfer to Zalera or them making a new alt on Zalera. Last I checked, a standard sub nets you a total of 8 character slots per server. So what's the issue? Are your friends unwilling to make a new character to play with you? Or are they using an entry subscription...which still allows them to make one character per sever, and 8 on their account?
I would much rather SE putting money toward actual content that everyone can enjoy, rather than put towards something that only a portion of the player base will actually benefit from. I would also prefer them to uprade their system so we can finally have certain features that we all can enjoy. Also, SE is a large company that creates and puts out a large variety of games. XIV isn't their only game, and the others take a lot of money to create/update as well. Unfortunately for us, the money made from XIV alone doesn't all go to making XIV better. It goes to different projects SE has going on. Yes they have a lot of money, but we cannot expect them to spend it all on us, and they will not spend money where they don't find it beneficial to them as a whole.
Mods should just lock this thread. Out of all the answers here, you even have that one guy who went into full detail about why unlocking Balmung is a bad idea.
But OP here goes on to say no one answered his question. What can you with a person who just flat-out refuses to understand the reasons behind the lock? You might as well talk to a wall at this point.
I'm done here lol. Mods pls lock and let this thing drown in the abyss of dead threads. Thanks.
It’ll stay locked until SE decides the pop is low enough to unlock it.
(The above should be the only reply to any thread about Balmung being unlocked).
First, Aether's a datacenter. Balmung's individual zones have crashed. While not a population issue, there was that fishing bug recently that would bring down worlds until SE first removed the spots, then finally addressed the issue.
Second, Balmung going down wouldn't just clear up connections. Servers don't work that way. Clients will try to reconnect. They'll also all get kicked back to the Lobby server, which hey, that's "Aether" there. And well...overload the lobby server and there goes the entire datacenter's access to get into every world on that datacenter.
Third, these servers aren't 10 years old. Assuming that SE recycled all their servers, the ones used in the now 7 year old 1.0 would have stayed in Japan. I kinda do this for a living, but you generally try to avoid shipping heavy expensive hardware overseas. Aether was previously in Montreal and now it's in California. Likely, they didn't ship the physical machines either and leased out hardware or just bought new machines. But a bigger and better machine can't always fix these issues. There's still packet processing and packet broadcasting to take into account, which is why the world is locked.
tldr: So like I explain on page 7, you can and do hit physical limitations, whether processing, bandwidth, latency, or a combination based on how many people are connected where. There's a minimal game experience that needs to happen and Balmung already impacts that. Until its population decreases enough for it to be considered stable in the long-term, it's not gonna open.
I can see it opening up in 4.2 at the earliest and later. They already opened Gilgamesh up and unless they lock it back up, it's population will grow just as big and they'd have no reason now to unlock Balmung.
When they first announced these locks, it just seemed like a way for them to soften the expansion hype causing server instability and double bonus of mitigating the amount of people rushing for houses later down the line. Just a tad bit more patience really. They'll open it in a few patches, if not the next one.
If they don't wish to take that for an answer. Tell them the answer they want to hear:
Square Enix thinks its hilarious to watch people try to create a character there and get an error. They have a running tally in their offices about all the failed attempts. Friends being apart from each other is just icing on the cake. They're letting it go for a while so when someone does play on another server and gets established.. they can offer the service to transfer, but at an inflated price. They get their giggles and greed on at the same time.
Is that better? Is that what everyone (or one, I don't really care) wants to believe?
There arent any - except for them saying they're monitoring the situation and as soon as it can be unlocked, it will be unlocked.
But its the only answer anyone, including SE, can give - as has been explained several times in this and every other thread regarding this issue. They cant give information or a date because they dont have it themself since its up to the people on Balmung to make it happen.
Your second reply is regarding a comment that was obviously sarcastic... are you, at this point, only looking to attack people and get a foren-ban because you're so frustrated about this situation?
Your friends knew beforehand that their server was locked - aka before they convinced you. I dont know how long they've been playing but they had over 3 years to get you on board of that sinking because overcrowded ship. They didnt. Or you didnt. And there is nothing reasonable on SE part that can be done about it. If you start insulting people trying to explain this to you, maybe you and your friends are better off looking for anotehr game...
Merry Christmas, everyone!
I don't care for a ban honestly i've seen much worse including people in this thread itself attacking my friends and myself and sarcastic or not it's on this post. I won't look for another game or my friends we enjoy this game, I've spent countless hours onto it and it's the one mmo i've enjoyed and before you single me out for "attacking people" others have attacked my friends and myself first.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all stay safe.
The interview literally says nothing more than them having to lock servers due to over population and the like. What else could the reason possibly be besides "it's overpopulated so we locked it" be? What is the OP looking for? There is nothing to discuss. No one in this thread has any power over when it gets unlocked, nor do we have any idea on when that would be. To have a discussion about something that is this black and white is a ridiculous notion. It would just turn into either a Squeenix bashing thread, or what it is currently. There is nothing to discuss.
Not really interviews provides insight onto what theyre up to whats their plans etc rather than some random person who thinks they know SE like their best buds. I was asking for info from them not what people are saying/what they heard talking direct quotes etc. Its like the balmung crashing Aether theirs no real proof of that other than hearsay until SE stated it did or not.
Seriously, can we lock this forum now? The question has been answered.
Nice reply there. I'm going to take it as "you're right".
Everything just boils down to it's locked because of the population and server stability. Knowing what they plan to do or why they did in more detail doesn't change those fundamental facts. What exactly are you looking for? No one has any idea when it will open up again. There has been no definitive date or time set. This has all been stated already. What else could you possibly be looking for?
You aren't right and again its like talking to a brick wall. I dont care what some random person i.e most people in this thread attempted to do and say its locked thats it. I wanted direct quotes from SE themselves is that such a hard concept to grasp? Do I need to say it in a different language? Regarding your last question i'm curious as to see what they're plans are going forward.
Here it is stated until the population of the server stabilizes, which means until other servers come up to us. This was posted 7 months ago, and Balmung is STILL #1 in NA server pop.
While thats actually something I asked(thank you) that was made Pre-SB so with the increase of people coming for SB that post isn't accurate anymore. I was hoping for something after SB launched if such a thing exists (like in the past say 5months or so) info after SB basically. Still thank you for providing something I asked.
Well yes and no because while SB had increased players coming back their was also people who transfered from that free transfer and with Balmung being unable to get anybody in the post isn't really accurate persay. Thats why I was saying like a month or so afterwards (5months or less) inregards to the people who've left ya know? Balmung is still full as all hell but it atleast isn't as big as it once was while it still being number 1 though.
This is the latest official information. I hope it answers your question.

Regarding Changes in Congested/Preferred Worlds (Nov. 28)
After implementing World population balancing incentives, we have confirmed a shift in the number of active players in each World.
Due to the creation of new characters by new players and use of the World transfer service, the status of preferred and congested Worlds has changed.
We thank you for your consideration and understanding as we continue our World population balancing incentives.
Based upon the current population, we are changing the status of each of the following Worlds as of today.

We will continue to observe the number of players logged in and change the status of Worlds periodically in order to balance the population among Worlds.
