I agree with most of what you have said, but that stuff isn't endgame or even close to it. In some ways the current dungeons are more like XI's BCNM except you run around more, and have to clear hurdles to get to the NM with the drops. Had the game launched as it is now we would probably have seen our first cap increase in October, and that still wouldn't get us to endgame. Agreed that we would have a lot to do if we had this content at launch. As things are now you can stop along the way to 50 to farm NMs, or do dungeons for the items you need to get you the next step along the path. I think having goals like wearing your artifact armor was key as well. It gave you something to look forward to on the way to 75.
I think Yoshi-P's analogy of a theme park is a good one. I started playing XI after the launch of Aht-Urghan, and there was a lot to do in that game. Getting to 75 was just the beginning and there were many stops along the way to rank up, get my airship pass, do promies, farm NMs for gear that you just had to have before you left 50, and most of all do things with friends. Once I got there I got to help other players take their first steps along the way in XI too.
At launch this game had grinding. Period! You could pick your flavor of grinding, mage, dd, gather, craft, but it was still just grinding. OK I guess there was a bit of story content, and I admit I have never seen Cinderella told in that way before. Tanaka had a good sense of humor if you ask me. Still it would sort of be like going to a theme park and finding all they had was a Merry-Go-Round. Theme parks contain a lot of things to do of course because not everyone enjoys the same things, nor is everything they contain appropriate for everyone who enjoys the park. I'd wager less than 25% of the people on my server have a craft leveled past 30, and maybe 5% have multiple 50s. They can fix crafting all they want and I bet those numbers won't change much because lots of people just aren't into it and never will be.
I hope at V2 there will be a lot of stuff for new/returning players to do. There is no reason for them not to have a pile of content even with current stuff being retooled. If SE is doing its job right the V2 content is being vetted by players the whole way through, and will be entertaining at launch.
Tanaka's biggest failure in my mind was setting an expectation for launch that he knew he wasn't going to be able to meet. That was a severe lapse in judgement on his part. SE needs to never make that mistake again or they are done. No one wants to spend 50 - $100 dollars on a game made by a company they can't trust to deliver on its promises. Give us good stuff in V2, and market it for exactly what it is and it should do ok. The next WoW will undoubtedly have better sales numbers, but that's sort of like saying Microsoft will sell more copies of Windows than Apple will of the Mac OS. That doesn't stop Apple from making good stuff that people want to buy and use. If SE produces a Gem it can end up lasting just as long as XI did even with 10% of the sales WoW 2 gets.
