Mounts should be able to be attacked by mobs and have permadeath. So if it dies we cry IRL.

I really doubt mounted combat will be implemented anytime soon. Probably not until sometime next year, and only in new regions. I don't want my chocobo do die! It should be like Super Mario Bro 3 where when Yoshi got hit he would blink and run away :P
Nah, just normal mounts for transportation will be nice at first. Then when the Garlean Empire zone is released we could have some cool mech mounts :)
Why are people so afraid of having more options aside from Chocobos? As it's been stated before other FF games have had different kinds of mounts, not to mention let's let the series progress past dusty old standards.
What is the argument against things other than chocobos? Not FF? Well we've already rendered that point moot. Anything else?
Argument for other mounts:
*Greater variety
*By association it allows players to be more expressive in their personality in-game or may accommodate their play style.
*Adds even more goals for people to aspire to. They could have quests for obtaining a license for each family of creature.
*It frees up Chocobos to be for more than JUST travel.
In all seriousness though, as long as it's in addition to Chocobos what's the problem?
Sorry Cxplorer, but I totally disagree.
1. They should charge, because FFXIV dearly needs money sinks (I feel that I can't really do anything meaningful with my gil currently).
2. Please give us a quest line that somehow leads to chocobos. I really would prefer quests with a goal to random repeatable levequests.
About the last point (and the original topic of this thread), I would prefer just Chocobos in every size, flavor, skill, with different equipment and so on, but as long as it fits into the lore of the world and they don't overdo it, I'm not totally against other mounts.
Mount Training: Allows you to ride a mount.
Cost: 5,000,000 gil
There's your gil sink. People that play on incomes less than that day to day will hate you for it, but there you have it.
Seeing how it's in-game currency, I don't see how one would ever feel anything meaningful about spending gil.Quote:

Airship maybe?
im not going to read the entire thread, but dodobo ftw. All hail the might dodobo *ark*
Examination of mount system (including chocobos)???
What THE HELL? INCLUDING CHOCOBOS??
Damn, this is Final Fantasy, ONLY chocobos are allowed.
They can differ in colours, armor or wathever.
Any other type of mounts don't fit in this game.
Final Fantasy games have had ships and submarines, trains, airships as well as chocobos. Minigames have even had snowboarding and motorbike racing...
Motorbikes and submarines do not really fit with the current feel of the level of technology of Eorzea, but I don't see why we could not have trains (as there are mine carts that run around on rails in Nanawa mines for example) and airships (obviously as we see them flying around) along with Chocobos.
"Mounts" would imply just an animal that you can ride, but I would like to see the introduction of various modes of transport within the game. Also, although chocobos have been the main mode of mounted transport in Final Fantasy games for like the past 20 years why can the mold not be broken for this MMO?
Sorry Matty, you're just plain wrong. As long as chocobos are in and everything else is in addition what is the problem? Seriously I've been a fan of the FF series for as long as I can remember and even I am fine with adding more than just Chocobos. Let the series move forward especially in a game that needs it and can make good use of it.
Well I'm speaking about "mount" system, we can have trains, airship, submarines, etc. but those are "trasportation" system, it's a different story.
In all FF the only mount is the chocobo, the bike in VII was just a mini-game, same for snowboard.
Magitek were made for fight, not for move faster in the world map.
You know why this FANTASTIC saga is dying? Because they're "breaking the rule".
I buy FF to play FF, I don't want FF to be another game, I'm not going to buy NBA if I want to play football game...
If you are a FF fans, you'll agree that no mount better then a chocobo can ever be made.
I can't see people riding dogs, dodo's or any other shit that is not a chocobo, at least not untill the game title is Final Fantasy.
I'm not english, I hope you understand.
I have to admit that I played the FF games because of the name and what it included inside: walk then chocobo then boat then airship (and open world). Changing these modes of transportation means changing FF to me and it will lose what attracted me at first.
Conclusion, I'm for chocobo only but customable ones (pieces of armor/colors/size). I thought about people saying it should evolve and expand but it simply doesn't work for me after all these years of knowing and enjoying what to expect in a FF game.
From what I gather from this thread FF = Chocobos and nothing else. The only thing that makes a Final Fantasy game Final Fantasy is Chocobos. Not the setting, the story, the music, the general art style, the combat, the classes or any of that. Just Chocobos. Not only that but it can only be exclusively Chocobos, anything else just steals their thunder and that's what people are afraid of.
Seriously though, give me a true compelling argument for having ONLY Chocobos. "It's FF" isn't enough, there has to be a better argument. This series evolves and this game could make use of it. By the "stick to tradition" logic we shouldn't have ever added any new classes past what we had in FF1 because it's just not FF. It really just tarnishes what made FF in the first place. Also we should be playing with menu turn-based battle systems in instanced fight zones that randomly trigger as you walk along.
We also shouldn't add chocobos, since that wasn't Final Fantasy I either.
If by mount, the detractors simply mean an animal that we used to get around in, well we've also had dragons, so that point is invalid.
I'm seriously starting to wonder who makes up the fanbase here. The ones that have been with the series since its inception and appreciate its MO of refining the old and introducing new, or the awkward wave of neo-FF/anime/jpoptards that popped up around FFX's life that demand that everything cater to every exact thing that they're used to at all times.
Classes has nothing to do whit mounts. (the old classes were a lot better anyway)
Chocobos and moogles are not the only thing that makes FF, but their are a ring in a chain, you can't broke even one ring.
"it's FF"
This should be more than enough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbSnTydh2kc
The first FF (the real one for nes) hadn't any mount, the first mount in the saga appear in the wood in FFII, and you know what that mount was? a CHOCOBO.
Really I can't remember were you ride a dragon expect in ff legend, and really legends are another game from the ff saga.
FFVIII got some cars... but you use it less than one time in the game.
I only mention other modes of transport because a "Mount" is a mode of transport, and this is an unofficial discussion thread- I was just putting my two pennies in ^^ Basically I was saying "Hell yeah!" to chocobos, but that I'm also not hugely against either other "mounts" or modes of transport. That is just my opinion, which of course not everyone will agree with :)
mount1
vb
1. to go up (a hill, stairs, etc.); climb
2. to get up on (a horse, a platform, etc.)
Also, what if the word used (i.e. mount) also meant a sort of transport that you could get up onto (airship, crazy magitek armour etc)?
Perhaps the word was used entirely on purpose to only mean an animal that you ride, but with airships flying around above us I would be sorely disappointed if we did not get access to use airships too (or any other forms of transport) in the future. That's all I was saying ^^
Nope. Chocobos aren't Final Fantasy because they weren't in the first one, which seems to be the argument that people like to use when denouncing anything new.
Also, Final Fantasy V had you using a dragon as a mount(albeit for a short while), and Final Fantasy Legend III isn't an actual Final Fantasy game, it's a SaGa game. If you guys are going to be making claims about what "is and isn't Final Fantasy", I expect arguments backed by expert knowledge on the series.
That isn't a stab at you(you DID ask nicely) as much as it is against everyone who tosses around the "it's not Final Fantasy, fuck that!" argument around like it was about to go out of style, so sorry if I was a little off-putting.
If SE adds more than just Chocobos, I can see them having different uses. Chocobos would dig for items in FFXI on using Gysahl Greens, but could be used for something different in this game.
Perhaps different mounts would have different speeds and uses. Like, say we have some sort of mount that is said to be able to dig through rock, it could be used to find hidden caves that would reveal some excavation points for Miners and perhaps some treasure chests with gil or other useful items.
Chocobos themselves could have digging again, and they could possibly be able to communicate with friendly animals to get clues on where to dig next. That'd be adorable :3
Each mount could be its own Gathering Class in this case. >.>
I just don't want to see creatures implemented that are mounts and nothing else. If we're going for a variety of mounts to suit people's tastes, I'd like to see ridable mobs. Like a dodo mount, a megalocrab mount, things like that...
Chocobos only.

ecc
I'm not saying that the one outside the main saga are bad or anything (I loved many of them), just they don't belong to the main saga.
The only mount in FF as always been the chocobo since II (the first one didn't have any mounts at all), breaking those little thing are not improving the saga, they are just killing it.
Anyway it's my opinion as a fan, (I've played them all, full cleared them all) like I said, I can't really see people going out riding dogs, monkeys, dragons or whatever ouside chocobos in this game.
If we are to have mounts other than chocobos give them something of their own so they arent just a image change. Myself i would like to see some form of battlefield where you can fight whilst mounted implemented. Square enix has been throwing armoured chocobo's at us for a while now its about time they got into the action too.
This is Final Fantasy for gods sake, certain signature things need to be kept, like airships, chocobo, Cid, moogle.
Chocobo represents Final Fantasy, we should not be riding on horses, tigers, lions, rhinos etc. It wouldn't feel right.
CHOCOBO FTW!
Chocobos ARE quintessentially Final Fantasy, and it would be dumb if SE just made mounts out of anything, unless like Nuru pointed out, maybe they have different strengths, traits, or abilities that make their purpose unique.
But to limit Final Fantasy to JUST chocobos? That's stifling creativity right there, which is what the series is based on. Just like FFXI goblins and mandragoras kinda became mascots for FF, there's no reason that SE can't come up with a new type of riding mascot on par with a chocobo or something.
Shoopuf is better than Red XIII
Hey, gang! Spoke with Yoshida about your lively discussion surrounding mounts. As I'm sure is a surprise to no one, there are a lot of varied opinions on personal mounts. We'll be looking into, and evaluating, the most popular ones. That said, please continue to let us know what you want to see in the future!
I want to see more than just Chocobos as mounts. We need to move past dusty old standards and innovate a little. I want to create the Lominsan Crab Cavalry damn it!
