Carbuncle is a familiar simply formed out of aether. I feel like it is possible to shape aether into pretty much anything you want. So a carbuncle is basically a creature representing the summoner made out of aether. I assume the Allagan summoners started with this, then they became more ambitious by using different amounts of aether to create egis. No doubt there were probably casualties and accidental tempering; but they needed to do what they needed to do.Quote:

To answer your question, Egi molded with primal essence is not quite the same thing as the concentrated aetherial essence itself. Garuda-Egi is an Egi that contains Garuda essence, it is not Garuda.
Of course, if my thoughtform theory holds any water, these all might be differently used, differently behaving, differently manifested forms of the same phenomenon.
