I always saw Thancred as a Gladiator who enjoyed throwing daggers and being dramatic; while interpreting the translation of his classification as a "bard" to being something like "a smooth-talking pretty-boy" which was written before the advanced/classic jobs (depending on your point-of-view) were planned to be implemented. But I only played through the Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa storylines until about level 20, so I might have missed something important.
