It a company could combine it's crafting skills to build a large project that would be amazing! I would LOVE to build a boat with my guild and go sailing.
Also the guild representation is a very cool idea.

Something I'm curious about, is everyone has assumed the company system to be a large scale linkshell/guild system (including myself). Although, looking back on the small amount of info SE has given about it, it looks like a one group per city thing. I can't quote the location of where this was said cause... don't wanna look for it >.> sure it was put somewhere on these forums, but Mr. Yoshi-P worded it saying there would be company leaders in each city and companies would be established in each city.
This has me slightly worried about what these actually are and that a large amount of people are going to be let down after hyping themselves up about what they are. I realize that the director said info will be released before the patch but, could info on this point be established, at the very least? It would be very good to know in advanced if this was to be a guild type system or just a 3 company (one per city) type of system, cause the latter option would seem to be less interactive but just more depth on the game world. As to where a guild system would greatly expand on actually person to person interaction and group gameplay.
I think company is being use more in a military sense. Perhaps you declare your allegiance to one of the city-states and become a member of their "company". Therefore I think we'll see some kind of Conquest or Campaign type system.
well, i suppose there could be some pvp, but if these so called company "quests" is a major part of it im guessing it
would be more PvE im afraid, to gain control over certain areas etc.
(If we had some kind of faction control system in place i guess PvP could be perfect for this)
But who knows, 2-3 companies "fighting" over control for a specific "Hamlet" could be possible,
but im not sure this would be considered as PvP. >.<
lol it's so hard to actually make any sense of what could be,
with what we currently have & what SE might add,
when there's so little information out there about Companies.
I guess im thinking back to the old FFXI's "Dynamis" runs when people
changed from Main social LS to their "Dynamis" LS.
But...instead of calling it "Dynamis LS", call it company instead. (Cuz Dynamis was an area not the group)
So ya, large-scale battles with a company.
I find it really strange if this "Companies" are only based upon high level classes, because what good is EXP/SP as reward at rank 50?
So the rewards must be something really new, or based upon some sort of "Company" growth system, like special currency perhaps.

They also did say, when first introduced, that there were public and private (LS-owned) companies.
What intrigued me as well was how it was mentioned your private companies would have LS specific goals and the ships would "allow access to multiplayer areas".
However that was under the previous management, so who knows how much that has changed.
Either way I'm more anxious to find out the details.

Like you said, companies /city... so we might look at something much in comparisson to FFXI's "Nation" control, but well more kinda "City" controlled areas in FFXIV.
(not sure the general term of "Nations" applies to this game)
If so i hope it offers a little bit more than just plain city "Control", or that would get boring real fast.
I can't wait to find out what companies are! I hope they add some really fun activities to do.
So if Grand Companies are the pseudo-corporate para-military groups .... what are Factions then?? How will the two be different?
What would be incredibly disappointing to me is if Grand Companies turn out to effectively just be another 3 Factions.
