The Trial vs Standard Edition doesn't feel fair

It is an extremely generous free trial. I don't see what this person doesn't understand about that - it's a free trial. You don't go to a restaurant, ask for a taste of their finest meal, then buy that finest meal, decide you don't want to actually pay so ask for them to cut out tiny bits of that meal.

Perhaps it's more like this: You go into a restaurant and try out their free breadsticks. You like them, so you order and pay for a meal. But then in the middle of eating your meal, you decided the meal it's not worth your pay and ask the chef to turn the meal into the free breadsticks, which they can't do.

A lot of people aren't reading OP. If your subscription lapses your account should be downgraded to free trial status, where you can play the base game with restrictions and all. Not be cut out entirely.

And yet you and OP seem to miss what other people are saying that they can't do that because there are things that are restricted in the free trial that you might've already gotten when playing with sub, such as gils over the cap, joining/creating an fc, linkshells, etc.

I read. Do it how other games solve the problem. You can't earn any gil over the limit, you can't join FCs, etc.

But the OP already bought the SE version without those restrictions. They can't just turn his acc into free trial with restrictions when he already have access without restrictions before.

And again, you've missed what people are saying.

What happens if when your sub lapses you have:

2 million gil. What happens to that 1.7 million gil that exceeds the limit?

What if you're in a FC? What if you're the leader? What if you're the only member of the FC as you made a solo FC?

What if you own a house or apartment? While it isn't an explicit limitation, it is implied as the cheapest housing is over 300K. And if you're not supposed to have a house, does that freeze your demolition timer?

What if you had items sitting in the mail?

What if you had retainers?

What if you had retainers on ventures?

What if you had retainers selling items on the marketboard?

What happens if they are able to lock things away and then something glitches out and you say lose that 1.7 million gil?

What happens to your ability to play characters that have gone past the limits of the trial? IE: over level 60, into SB content, started a class that was introduced in SB or later - Samurai only needs level 50 after all and can be picked up in Ul'Dah.

It's the what if your account has things that would be prohibited in a free trial. What happens to those things? Is the game coded in such a way that it's capable of dealing with the solutions to that?

There are ways (some very easy ways) to address all of the other questions raised. The issue is just whether or not SE sees it as being worth addressing them because this one remaining question is really the only one that matters. It's an easy assumption that the game and account systems as they exist don't just have that ability enabled or encoded so is there way to do it given how archaic and backwards a lot of the FF14 and SE account coding works, and is there a way to do it that SE sees as worth tackling? We don't really know the answer to this question but, given that SE hasn't done it yet and this issue of not being able to revert a paid account to a free trial has existed ever since there was a free trial, I'm guessing the answer is probably no.
