Ah this topic again, third time this week?
Because they dont even know what kind of game they are talking about : imagine being offended by players Role Playing in Game a character... in a mmoRPG XD
‘Triggered’ is the new ‘toxic’ to me. The concept itself lacks any real substance besides referring to a vague sense of supposed outrage from a target group.
Couldn’t you just as easily say that people are being triggered by having to think about the pronouns they use to refer to others? Or that they’re being triggered by an expectation of political correctness?
The claim is made that people are being ‘triggered’ by misuse of pronouns. But surely if your reaction to their reaction is to do essentially the same thing (protest about ‘triggering’) then you’re just as ‘triggered’ as the ones you claim to be unreasonable. And at that point doesn’t ‘triggered’ as a concept fail? Since being ‘triggered’ in the general usage is used to refer to a sense of ‘unreasonable or unacceptable outrage beyond the standard reaction’
In my understanding, people refer to ‘triggering’ when they’re unable to resolve some situation where they’ve been found exhibiting a behaviour that isn’t socially acceptable anymore. Homophobia, racism, sexism, general bigotry. When someone is accused of one of these behaviours but isn’t able to understand the implications of their behaviour (‘why does saying him instead of her make me the bad guy? It’s their fault for playing the opposite gender; they’re the abnormal one and thus my reaction is justified’). Ultimately, the accused runs of out ways to resolve this situation without making an admission of guilt. And thus, the group making the accusation becomes ‘triggered’ - exhibiting an unreasonable sense of outrage towards a supposedly reasonable behaviour (‘they’re wrong for getting angry, not me for assuming their sexuality’).
I mean, what better way to devalue a group’s opinion than by characterising them as unreasonable, illogical and entire incorrigible?
Lastly as a disclaimer, for the purposes of this post the term ‘triggered’ is not associated with actual psychological triggering which is whole different story than the ‘outrage triggering’ people talk about on the internet
It's a video game. Where you interact with members of the general public. Who make their own characters. I'm not sure how anyone would have the emotional energy to be upset whenever they saw a character they didn't like or found out that the pretty girl or guy wasn't being played by someone of the same gender.
LOL yeah. "Welcome to the wide world of Eorzea, where you can be whatever you want to be. Just as long as you're playing the same gender as yourself. Otherwise you might offend people on the internet who will call the moral/fun police on you."
In my sigmascape static there was 5 hetero guys, 2 gay guys, 1 girl.
5 cute aura/miqo girl characters, 1 miqo guy, 1 aura guy and 1 roe guy.
Fun game: combine players and their characters!
The guys who have made their character their waifu (their words), and take suggestive photos of them weird me out a little. Not the fact that the characters look slutty or w/e, but that the guy basically told everyone that they use their character for... Relieving themselves, and weird me out when they're like "ShE's tHe pErFeCt fEmAlE"
I'm fine with characters that look sexy or badass or w/e, but please don't go into detail of what you would do with them if you could, that's just awkward for everyone involved.
ESPECIALLY if they're Lalafell. I don't need to read that, only the FBI watching you needs to read that
I don't care if someone refers to me as he or she. I don't tell people which I am outside the game. And my behavior in game does not make it clear, either. I'm fine with this. My gender is irrelevant to the game and the people I interact with, both in my FC and in general interactions.
I play a Catgirl. Refer to me as he or she, I'll respond to either.
As for how I address others, I will refer to the gender of the character unless or until I am made aware otherwise. Even then I might fall back in to using the character's gender.
I usually like to keep an air of ambiguity around my gender, but here it's probably prudent to preface this by telling that I'm biologically male. My mental situation is more complicated.
That depends on how you view your character. An object of sexual fantasy is one way, and certainly a valid one. Others might view their character as a role model, or a friend, in which case gender matters less. I see my character as myself, so her looks are based on a version of my own self-image. A less conflicted male player with the same point of view as myself could play a male character without finding it gay in the slightest.
I identify with my character strongly enough that it feels genuinely weird if people refer to me with masculine pronouns in-game. Even people who know my IRL self. I'm not offended, there's just this weird feeling of disconnection between the pronouns and myself.
Sort of, but again the way I view my character changes how things work. She's me, rather than just some pretty thing to look at while playing. So while deciding what to wear I reject some clothes because I'm too modest to wear them, even though I think they might look attractive on others.
"He" used to be the default pronoun in the English language, used when the person's gender is not known. These days it's largely been replaced with singular "they", constructs like "he/she" or one of about a dozen less popular alternatives, but someone who first learned English a while back might still instinctually use "he".
I don't think the game lets you examine and thus find out the gender of another character you don't currently see on the screen. So if you're in a large FC or a linkshell, other people only have your name to go by when deciding which pronouns to use. And yours is sufficiently gender-neutral that I couldn't tell if it belongs to a male or a female.
As for the original question about getting "triggered" (quotes because I'm of the opinion that the word has been misappropriated from psychology). I don't know why people get outraged about female characters, but I think it's stupid and narrow-minded. I guess it's some form of aversion towards things which don't conform to one's own world view.
This is the way I think about it; my character is female, but I am not. I'm not a paladin, red mage, or dancer (ha!) in real life, either.
This thread offends me. I identify as a purple lion in real life.
