FF XIV still considered a joke

I don't know what the joke is exactly, but I will tell you that I would feel embarrassed to recommend the game to my friends. They would play it and laugh at me. /sigh So when they ask me if they should try it out, I usually say, "no you probably shouldn't bother with it". Honestly, not many people could put up with it in its present state.

If this was supposed to be a joke, it was way too subtle for me. Activision does own Blizzard since the merge with Vivendi Games in 2008.

Bingo. No one, I mean NO ONE, actually takes Kotaku seriously, except for...well... idiots. I mean they are essentially just forum posters/trolls masquerading as journalists. Take his entry for FF XI for example - "Never played it, all online and junk...". Can you imagine a sports journalist whos supposed to write about soccer "i never liked it, they kick a ball with their feet and junk".

I mean some people like it, much like you said it's like the National Enquirer.

And remember - they DO get paid by page view...

Video game reviewers go through a ton of video games all the time. It is their job. It's no surprise they're not keeping up on the current state of an MMO with such a dismal launch. They simply don't have the time. This is exactly why they're making a big deal about relaunching with 2.0. We cannot expect anyone - especially game reviewers - to give the game a second look until then.

And we should honestly be grateful that they're not. I love XIV, but it wouldn't be doing the game any favors if reviewers posted a feature every update saying: "It's a little bit better... but still sucks."

That said, yeah. lolkotaku anyway.

You'd be surprised on how many people take someone elses critique into their own account. Most people on planet Earth are morons.

Popular opinion often dominates in editorial articles on Kotaku. I have been reading them for years and have frequently seen them go out of their way to take unwarranted potshots at certain games simply because it has become popular to do so.

Case in point: Final Fantasy XIII. You will rarely, if ever, hear any editorial discussion of the game that is not then followed by the phrase "too linear" or the word "disappointment". Nobody ever talks about how it tries to establish itself as a narrative based game, or how organically its characters seem to grow from one-dimensional archetypes into fleshed out three dimensional characters.

Truly, one of the most unique things about 13 is how it relies on its characters to propel the story as opposed to world events, a method of storytelling that, oddly enough, is still somewhat new to the genre. Nobody with any power on Kotaku will ever discuss this however, as it would require publishing an article against the grain of popular opinion.
