Gender locked race?

A counter to this would be Moon Keeper Miqo'te, which are basically the same thing lore wise. The males are rare and secluded, only coming to the clans when it's time to reproduce. They also gave Sun Keepers a similar storyline where the Nunh's are basically stuck back at the tribe doing administration work and can rarely leave their duties, with the Tia's helping them and having similar restrictions. A good portion of the Titan build up handles this, and even in Stormblood we see that the males of traditional clans have very little freedom unless they're outcasts. Those who have left the clans are generally freer and we already know Viera have been known to leave, even if they do so only once in a blue moon. (Though that doesn't account for those who left and reproduced. So a stable population outside the Wood is very likely.)

They already found a way to bend the lore for gameplay. Hell, they've bent the lore numerous times for the same of gameplay. It's already pretty well known that the lore team takes a back seat when necessary. So while I get your point, I don't see why this would be the hill they want to die on when they've caved on similar issues in the past.

Male miqos are supposed to be rare in lore and they're one of (if not THE) most popular male player character combo

Their own lore that THEY created when designing this race for FFXIV! They could have very easily just not had the males be secluded and limited in numbers.

You can't even argue that the lore already existed in other games, because the Ivalice of FFXIV is not the same Ivalice as FFT/FFXII. Remarkably similar, sure, but there are plenty of differences, and one of those could have easily been that male Viera are plentiful and seen.

As a follow up, they also create the lore, so it's their choice to make them a race with a "rare gender". Even if they were that way previously in other games, they've had no problems coming out to say that the Ivalice, Dalmasca, etc. of XIV are not the same ones of Tactics and 12. They could have easily tweaked the lore to make it more balanced, especially since they've already done the "m/f live separately" schtick with miqo'te.

You can't really control the players' choice of race and gender combination. However, FFXI did make a gender-locked race before. Two, actually. Galka were males only while Mithra were female only. Mithra having Viera's stipulation that males were rare and basically kept in villages for breeding.

Yup. That's why I said it'd be in very poor taste if it were planned to be male and female, but only show females, especially if it came down to "the males weren't finished yet." Base models should be done already. 5 months is not that long of a time in development for a game.

Well SE broke Blue Mage going into 2019, guess they also wanna make sure Viera make people unhappy too.

Blue Mage limited by game play, Male Viera limited by Lore, we gotta tell SE to stop limiting things.

Moonkeepers.

Yet, thanks to SE understanding that people playing the character they want to play is more important than made up lore that isn't real and is designed as an excuse to be lazy/cheap, nearly half my male friends play moonkeeper males.

Remember adventurers are a rare breed too. Special members of their races that were gifted with the echo and set out to murderfy some gods.


Hell miqo'te are LITERALLY supposed to be the least populated race in eorzea, yet there's no queue to make one when they're one of the most popular player races.

They did the same thing with xiv 1.0, and decided it was real dumb when making arr and fixed it.

Viera needs males. If they don't add males then they need to add a male only race.
