So what's up with the violence against chocobos in Tailfeather?

Very true. One of the quests has you figuring out that a recently caught female chocobo was acting weird because it had eggs in its nest. The result is that the hunter sighs and then frees her because of Tailfeather's rules. The Tailfeather hunters have quite a few rules designed to limit their danger to the environment and sustain the forest's ecosystem.

There's only one quest where you 'have' to kill a chocobo, but personally I just pretended that we weakened it and it later went on to become someone's loyal mount *laughs*. I have a big soft spot for chocobo so these are the only quests I ended up skipping entirely - the optional side-quest ones at least.

But seriously, do you guys read dialogue or guildleves at all? Otherwise you'd know that not only are these hunters;
A) Don't over hunt and punish those who try. (MSQ)
B) Have ostrasized a group of hunters that hunt female birds only (guildleves) and keeping female birds captured during breeding seasons. (Sidequests)
C) Are very kind to their animals after capture and only use humane tools of capture like trap cages verses beartraps.(MSQ and sidequests)
D) Got a man sent to prison for murdering a mother chocobo then kidnapping and frying up the chick your team rescues from a Tailfeather worker as revenge. (seriously man what the fuck)



I understand if D upsets you, becuase that was intention. It was cruel and evil.
Hunting and catching animals for livestock purposes isn't some inherently evil thing. It's a fact of life for many!

I don't think it was a bad decision or 'evil', I just didn't like the quests that pushed me into it myself ^^ I am well aware that they have an ethical code of conduct and I appreciate that side of them but it still doesn't make the concept of killing chocobo as part of Hunt Logs or quests, or even seeing what a certain someone does following their return any more appealing to me! I, at least, am not complaining that such a thing existed, I was just sad when I encountered it, haha.

I loved all about tailfeather quest and sidequests.

Shows exactly what you would expect from a settlement in the wilderness, specially dravania where everything seems to have developed a way to hunt others, nature is cruel by our own definition, but in reality it just is. Some hunters are more capable than others, just as a Wyvern isn`t more or less evil for eating a Vath. But even in such an extreme wild enviroment, the hunters of Tailfeather have a very strict code, and they punish hard anyone who breaks it, but so is the cruelty of life.

I loved every minute of it, thought i would have expected a more gory end to the rouge hunters, again, just as in real life, cruel and evil doers most of the time don`t get what we belive they deserve, making the whole thing even more bitter and that was delightful, the quest didnt even gave you the satisfaction of justice (which was probably in the minds of many, starting to shape more like revenge).

Even to that end, the quests were amazing. Kinda makes me want more of this, maybe a long secondary quest with several seasons (ala hildibrand) in this tone.

I think I have killed too many other animals in this game to claim I am at-all bothered by slaying anything else for another quest. It was just the part that the OP described as "There's a questline to kill a Chocobo who's fighting back and freeing caged chocobos." That just really depresses me. It show such a high level of intellect and compassion for it to try and open the cages to let out the other Chocobos.

It's like killing a wild gorilla, and killing a gorilla that knows sign language. It just seems like two completely different things.

And, if memory serves, the hunters even comment that they don't want to kill this chocobo, but due to its aggressive behavior they need to put it down as a last resort for their own safety. Last thing they want is to have a hunter, merchant, or traveller getting killed by an uncontrollable chocobo.

It's just one of those situations where it's a wild animal, or a human being.

It sucks, but there is no contest.

As others have said in the tailfeather quest chain there is literally a single hunter who was an outsider to begin with and who is discovered to be doing things like killing a mother chocobo and stealing her eggs and generally using cruel methods in his hunting to the absolute outrage of the hunter that you actually travel with, both she and the warrior of light are shown to be livid over it and the man is banished from tailfeather under the threat of violence. All of the chocobos in tailfeather are treated very well, if you actually pay attention to the idle chatter around the area and talk to the npcs.

They are hunters yes, but they are doing so to make a living, and have a great deal of respect for life. Thus their rules

1. You do not kill a female chocobo knowing that she has eggs/hatchlings to take care of. again doing so gets the offending hunter immediately banashed from the settlement because he showed such a blatant disrespect for the lives of the chocobos that the other hunters threatened violence if he didn't leave immediately.

2. You do not overhunt the chocobos in the forest or use cruel traps that can cause more pain than required: there is actually a cart full of leg traps in tailfeather, they are actually there because the hunters in tailfeather removed them from the nearby forest, they prefer safer traps for their own use and dictate areas that are ok to hunt in at any given time to avoid causing lasting harm to the wildlife population.

3. you do not /waste/ a chocobo that is killed, in the end that dirtbag hunter that got banished comes back and ends up cooking a chocobo chick one of the other hunters was taking care of entirely out of spite. So what does the miqo'te huntress do? She eats it, because not doing so would be a complete waste and the bird would have been killed for nothing. You arrived too late to save the chocobo, once again the miqo'te huntress and the warrior of light are disgusted by the other hunters disrespect for life but there is nothing else to do besides deal with the hunter and do the only even mildly respectful thing that can be done with an animal that has been killed and cooked, that being not wasting it.

4. The one time that you are made to kill a chocobo in the quests is because the bird had begun attacking hunters to free other chocobos, and no one was happy about having to put it down for trying to protect its own kind but they couldn't risk it seriously injuring/killing someone so that was a simple case of pragmatism and necessity.

My own miqo'te (bard, leatherworker, botanist) fit in with the hunters incredibly well, i actually made a point of getting a skyhunter gear set just because I actually loved the storyline and they are everything I had hoped to see in a miqo'te tribe on xiv.

Literally the only bad people around their camp are rogue hunters who the tailfeather group make a point of hunting down when they threaten the stability of the forest. That is the theme of nearly every fate that directly involves their people. A group of rogue hunters has gone too far, now they need to be dealt with.

It seems to me that people either twist what actually goes on in the tailfeather quests in to something that they are not or simply misunderstood them entirely because they got so outraged by the villian of the quests that they stopped paying attention to what was actually happening.
