yeah i think when working with lancer, they forgot that they have superior range to other classes, mostly because until ifrit, most lancers didnt bother to use their safe ranges.

Still the damage you do as pug is enough.
The range is another topic.
No, it's not. Incoming damage, utility, and DPS are all important parts of the same thing.
The most important part is whether or not it's fun. I'm trying to do the best job I can personally do in any given encounter with any of the classes I have at 50. It'd be great if Pugilist was able to shine in one way on Ifrit, or gleam at a few, or not have such sub-par DPS for having to work a lot harder.
The only "fun" part of Ifrit for me as a Pugilist is sitting on the edge of my seat for the whole encounter, but then I realize the rest of the DDers (well, some of them) carried me through the fight.
lol ok we just wait for monk then :)
But I still think that pug is not "archer bad" on the fight.
i dont think pugilist is bad, but really, theoretically, we should have had more benefit than a lance on a one on one fight, as is, we are actually less effecient defensively (less range so more likely to to take dmg) and basically fairly close damage wise (but if this is less then huh?)
point is pug cant attack multi targets as well as any other job, and cant take less damage overall than any other job, where is its strength?
hmmm
I like the class but Im a monk fan thats why :P
We'll shine when mobs come out made of cinder blocks and cheap ply wood.
Hell, we could do well against brick mobs too.
Don't get me wrong.
I still feel Pugilist is awesome against flying MOBs and lightning-based MOBs, and great (as well as interesting/fun) against MOBs we can reliably get an evade/miss from (mainly for Simian Thrash), buuuut...
Ifrit is the first primal (the first fight that matters, at least as far as lore), he's relatively difficult (though, it's hard for me to say how hard he'll be after my positioning lag issue is fixed), and I'd expect Pugilist would be great in the evil moogles fight (as the abilities/stats/equipment are now). But still, seeing how badly Ifrit was tuned towards Archers and Pugilists makes me a saaaad panda.
Edit: and I'm also looking forward to Monk with great anticipation.
