So, a VIT build does not translate to FFXIV very well. Oh well. *sigh* It was a fun build in Dofus.

The biggest eye opener in this thread has been about Spell Speed. Coming from WoW, I was used to it being a good stat for DoT classes because it could give you extra tics on your DoTs. Finding out that is not the case in FFXIV, it makes a lot more sense why Crit is the valued secondary stat.

Next up... how about a book smacking STR/CRIT build? :D

Book smaking on SCH is actually a done thing in end game raids :). The book auto attacks actually add up quite nicely, however it can only be done in certain circumstances where there is room around the boss and you dont jeopardise yourself by being in melee range :).

And with FF14, the stats pretty much only lead to a cookie cutter build for each job, wth little to no room for manoeuvre :(.

After reading all the responses, I find it funny that we are discussing "builds" in a game like FFXIV, where anything different from the standard is frowned upon and not viable at all.

Coming from Ragnarok Online, I got used to the FFXIV system but I really miss all the possibilities you could create with RO class system. A Paladin, for example, had at least 8 types of builds (full support, "caster", full speed, tank, sacrifice, shield build, hybrid duelist and a damage reflect build). RO is a 2002 game. Final Fantasy XIV is a 2012 game and we don't have anything that comes even close to that.

I know the styles are a little different, FFXIV being more instanced and all, but both of them are MMORPGs, and I really wish the devs would learn a thing or two from RO class system and design.

I understand that completely, also coming from RO. I honestly miss the freedom of experimenting with builds for a single job. It's not that it doesn't exist here, SE tried but it's so shallow and absolutely no room to do anything outside what they intended each job to be and for what content. RO was also more PvP oriented when it game to endgame content. PVP in FFXIV is... wanting, and also the only place where varied stat builds could possibly matter but also skill/talent choice and progression, but both things were lost in the making of FFXIV because of streamlining for players of all kinds.

Thanks for the helpful replies to my post :) and for them been nice and not condescending/arrogant. Its a shame different builds are generally not accepted/needed/wanted in this game itd mean everyone can bring summat different to the table. As I stated I don't struggle to keep up heals with current setup so will probs keep for fun but will rethink build for end game content.

I've played RO too. The "choice of build" is merely an illusion, though. Let's take the Turn Undead priest build. No one want those as an ally for WoE or exp parties that doesn't involve undead. Regardless of the amount of skills you have to choose from, players will always be funneled towards a certain direction by the community.

What it did offer was diversity of roles with each class as there was no predetermined role for each class in that game

Build diversity is something that has been requested for a long long time. Skill trees, unique passives on relics and raid wepaons etc etc etc. Sadly nothing seems to be happening when it comes to this :(.

That's true, which was why cookie cutter builds were what you saw the most of. I played a Biochemist/Creator for years and never went for a acid demo build. But the nerf to the other offensive skills pushed me to ninja. Went with the magic build but it made me effectively useless in several pve situations. Wrecked in pvp though.

You mentioned it yourself: It is a super specific build. While it's great for it's purposes, which would be slaying undead, it's only viable for certain areas and thus level ranges. It's uses for MVP purposes was near non-existent and was simply useless for pvp. Even in the PvE world it was only good for undead monsters at very specific level ranges. For everything else, it was a very bare bones healer. So let's take another kind of possible skill for a certain class: Slyness/Gangster's Paradise for Rogue. Would you take one of those for whatever purpose? Or here's another one: Graffiti/scribble for rogue. Or a full crafter smith. None of these builds have any real PvE or PvP value - Aside from the taunting/trolling value by leaving a yo momma joke with Graffiti or message trap.

While you have the choice to reset your skills to meet the needs for a different purpose, your "freedom of choice" becomes restricted by that particular purpose. Thus it becomes funneled. Especially so if you're joining a group with a certain purpose. With WoE being the biggest one. So yes, "choice" is an illusion. Unless a mace acolyte (not even a priest) at max level becomes a community favourite, it'll never happen even if it's your "choice".

Speaking of (bio)chemists, I played it before bombs got nerfed. Stacking bombs endlessly inside a certain Payon castle was simply broken xD

Just to hop on the RO discussion here, your build is generally suited to the content you're playing, the class you're playing, and even the equipment you have access too. However, thanks to the exponential nature of damage stats, your stat build will be similar to other players with the same role in mind with a possible slight variation (Guillitone Fist Champions w/ either 130 STR or 120 STR + more sub stats, for example). Overall the stat deviation from one of the few primary stats in any given role was in the +-10 range more often then naught. If you didn't have a good stat build, good luck being "effective" in the role you were suppose to be designated for and thus get you pushed away from parties / guilds.
