At least the map sizes need a rework if flying should be usefull in them.

God no, just guessing really. But all the assets already exist I'd have thought, not like they made the maps then deleted everything they used to do it surely.
Not saying it would be an easy job, but I think it's one they should eventually get round to doing. Does it not bug you, even slightly, to see a majestic dragon crawling around on the floor in the old areas for no discernible in-game reason?

Oh yeah, some areas would have to be merged. Definitely.

I would like to see flight added to the old zones, and would be fine with slowing progress in adding new content until this is done. Why? Because flying is fun. Seeing Coerthas or Dravania from above was a whole new experience after doing all the questing and progression on the ground. The feeling of freedom was incredible!

I don't think that the old areas need to be merged. Small areas usually express themselves by being more complex terrain - and after dealing with that complexity on foot for so long, it will be nice to be able to take flight and shortcut it. Take, for example, Upper La Noscea, one of the smallest zones. Flight would be useful for things like crossing the lake without using the gobbie ferry, or flying up to the top of the cliff in Oakwood to zone into Outer La Noscea.

It's certainly an exaggeration to dismiss flight because there would be "nothing to do". Folks still do things in older zones, and anything worth doing there would be all the easier with flight. Beast tribe quests, for instance, are a good source of Retainer Ventures, and not a terrible source of exp; how nice it would be to be able to do Amal'ja quests and know you can just fly out to the places you need to go in Zan'rak and Za'harak. For folks doing FATEs to level alt jobs, wouldn't it be awesome to just fly over the divide between the east and west portions of Eastern La Noscea?

The rework that would need to be done (such as patching in missing geometry for areas that were left undone because there's no possible angle by which to view them from the ground) may be problematic, but I think it would be worthwhile. Being able to fly in the old areas would be so refreshing for the things you still want to do there!
