Derp! We HAVE to see this content concept actually turned into reality. It would work perfectly. It has never been tried before, and it would give Square Enix an excellent marketing point for FFXIV when they start their marketing campaign for the PS3 launch.
Yoshi-P, are you listening?!

This is something I've been wanting since forever.
Fiores pointed out having Colosseum Marks and that really got me thinking. Maybe they do not need to be used for anything like Guild Marks are. A gil reward seems pretty substantial. I was thinking maybe these Marks could instead reflect your ranking or skill. You'd receive marks in proportion to your opponent upon winning, or have some taken away after a loss.
Maybe it could also probably effect your gil reward. Battling an a opponent with high Marks/ranking would yield a slightly better reward. Or maybe even something like a win streak that increases reward as well.
Only thing I don't agree with is having to pay to spectate every match. It's something I could find myself spending a lot of time on. I think it would be cool to pay for admission once until you leave, then you have to pay again. Maybe we can even get some cool camera angles or close ups while we spectate. ^_^

I like these ideas a lot.
A couple of things that I think could add to it. I think having each individual fight be an instanced event would help. Then we could have a board of sorts set up at the entrance to the coliseum that would show all the fights set to go in the next five minutes and allow you to teleport to the specific instance that you want to spectate.
Something that I think might help would be the ability to block /tells or /shouts or any sort of communication between the combatants and the spectators/outside world once the match is set. Might make it so that betting is a more viable thing. Set it up so that /say and such could only be heard by the combatants inside the arena, so that pre-match taunting could still commence, but making it so that it would be harder to rig events. Parties could still talk normally in the party channel if there are 2 vs. 2 matches and such. If they wanted to add to the atmosphere, they could make it so that the default emotes could still be heard normally between the combatants and the spectators, so you could get a 'roar of the crowd' type feel to the combat.
Also, betting would be more feasible if you could bet on the match, but only between individuals spectating. Not some huge pool that everyone bets into, but allow a specific action available only while spectating that allows you to offer a bet to another individual spectating, then automatically move the wager to the winning party once the match has been resolved. Would allow people to still gamble and get that 'coliseum/gladiator thrill,' but would also make it much harder to rig on a large scale. Would also be fun to add a couple of 'leaderboards' for this. One for win/losses and such with players, but also a leaderboard based on individual winnings from side-bets. Would be fun to receive a bet request from someone, check their name on the leaderboards, and see that they're positive 40 million gil or something ridiculous.
So, in a condensed version, my ideas are:
-Make coliseum battles instanced.
-Have a board that allows spectators to choose which instanced fight they want to spectate.
-Block communication between arena combatants and the outside world, with the exception of default emotes.
-Allow betting, but only between individual spectators.
-Add a leaderboard for arena win/losses as well as for side-bet winnings.
Anyway, these are all great ideas that I've been reading so far! I'm not much of a PvPer, but I could definitely see myself wasting time watching high-level matches between other players. And, as an RPer, this would be a great way to spend time on a guild outing, or just as another way to resolve in-character conflict!

Add server rankings and cross-server championships. :)
Add party fights too.
I am sure it will be a huge draw.
Possible rankings:
1. Most mobs cleared in X time
2. Most objectives cleared in X time
3. Most # of straight wins
4. By player accumulated points (for pvp)
5. Most stylish party (determined by # of regiments used, finishing moves...etc)

I like all the ideas here and I would like to add some of my own.
When in the crowd it would be nice to have some cheers and boos. Maybe they set them to your action bar while in the arena. This would be great for the combatants to know who is being rooted for.
Also it would be nice for a large display showing the names of the combatants. This way people can find favorite heroes and villains of the arena and gives champions more than just gil as reward but also notoriety. To avoid lore mix ups it could be a large crystal or something that conjurers summons fire or some element from to write the names of the combatants in the sky.

I really hope the devs confirm they're going to implement PvP - it just seems like there's more to play for in the higher levels if you know you can play against someone. Obviously, open-world PvP would probably be a terrible idea in Eorzea (although perhaps duels could be cool if both players consent), but I REALLY love the idea put forth in the OP. The idea of both a PvP and a PvM arena makes my mouth water. Throw in party v party battles and it's just absolutely fantastic - that's the kind of thing that would make me actually recommend this to my friends who play other MMOs.
This game's customization and crafting options are fantastic, but imagine being able to show off your gear against another person in battle!
