Wow! So many interesting reasons!! I'd have to say I wanted my character to be kind of a mold-breaker. I chose seeker of the sun because I've always felt more tied to the sun than the moon, and plus I love the eyes :) I'm not a cat person, generally, so I tried to make him look kind of fox-like. I started in Gridania as a lancer and quickly changed to arcanist as soon as I made it to Limsa. Now I mainly use both SMN and BLM for just about everything I do!
I have a very strong tie to water and wanted that to reflect on Mercury, his guardian deity is Thaliak (who is both god of rivers/waterways and knowledge, lending well to my love of caster classes) and his last name, Diluvio, is an Italian word meaning "deluge". In this same vain, I chose the Maelstrom due to Limsa's amazing thalassocratic society and obviously charismatic leader.

I wanted to be a monk before all else, and read that the fighting style came from the state of Ala Mhigo, hence my choice to be a Highlander.
And I'm glad I did, the Monk quest line felt rather personal to me, and I imagine my character to be a refugee seeking to restore the state to it's former glory, rather then being an outsider had I been other races.
I want the Ala Mhigo expansion so much.

I began as a Highlander because I thought he looked cool. Then I fantasia'd to a Midlander, because I just couldn't get over how despite being a Black Mage I was taller than everybody else.
I mean, a tall Black Mage? That's got to be breaking some sort of lore rule.

I was originally going for male Sunseeker back in beta, but when I met Merlwyb, my heart was pretty much set. And when I learnt about the Seawolf names and their meanings, I was instantly hooked up. It took me a bit of time to get used to the running animations and the sheer size compared to my puny miqo'te, but I'm very happy with my choice and wouldn't change a thing. ^^ Still have my old fantasia gathering dust.
And there's the fact that I don't like playing teenage girls. /cough midlander & miqo'te /cough

I chose the race that looked most like me irl.
....what?

I went Highlander because I've always been "Hyur-centric" in every RPG I've ever played, and I don't like the Midlander female's prissy little running style :)

I wanted something different from FFXI (Never liked the similarities between the two games, as I play both, I would've preferred them separated, much like each other Final Fantasy game between one another). It came down to Highlanders, Roegadyn females or male Miqo'te.
The final choice went on male Miqo'te merely because it was the only race to have a tail. I hope for a new tailed race though, getting pretty tired of receiving cat jokes all the time.

Well I really like Camelot and the summon from ff7 knights of round. My fav is Gawain the knight that can't be beat in the sun so after seeing seeker of the sun I chose it.After reading all the culture i like them all but i still like the seeker of the sun.:D

I rolled a Lalafell because, they're cute. I made her female for the same reason (Can't go wrong with pigtails and bows). Other reasons are to set up a David-Goliath vibe, So I picked the shortest size option.
I picked the Dunesfolk because of their pupiless eyes and the gemstones they put on their foreheads.
I chose Thaumaturge because I spent a lot of time playing Terraria with magic weapons. I also wanted to make a charater that would use the forces of Light and Dakrness (So Black Mage, Paladin and White Mage my priorities when it comes to getting jobs).
I will admit that the name I chose for her does fudge the naming conventions a bit (I also considered "Kokoro Koro" but that seemed too otakuish and I felt that someone else would have already taken the name anyway (And yes I am aware that there's another toon on another server with the same name as my character)).

I went Miqo'te, because of the character -that i have become really fond of- from the book I'm writing, She is from a race of beings that are part human part animal. each person is of a different animal even if they are related by blood, the animal you represent is determined by the day, month, and moon phase. Anyways Eirika is part fox, and since the Miqo'te is the closest to that I chose it
