Square went with their ideas and vision to make this game, and it has failed pretty drastically. If anything they need to sort of do a brain trust on what their player community actually wants. If anything they should be collaborating with the players more, at the very least having official polls.
Then actually going into detail of what they are changing and getting input as opposed to being vague and saying "were going to change the battle system, it will have auto attack".. but actually laying out their ideas and letting us pick their brains before they waste time and effort on something that most people might not like. (granted "the forums are left with "fanboys" and anyone who says anything bad about SE is a "troll".. so its a captive audience)
With how slow these changes are coming, if they completely miss as i imagine they will at some point its a ton of wasted effort.
I mean hell... they made a game for "casual gamers" with the intent that people would still play ffxi as they could get what they wanted done in ffxiv a few hours a week. This alone shows they don't know their own player base. They are just trying to capture some of the generic MMO'ers as opposed to sticking to their guns and what the final fantasy franchise has always been. Its sort of sad if you ask me. The first people who are going to play a final fantasy MMO are people familiar with the franchise. We don't want a hello kitty island adventure, we want a challenging and rewarding experience..
